Nickelback Open Ischgl’s Season Today

Canadian rock band Nickelback played to 21,000 fans at the Top of the Mountain Opening Concert in Ischgl earlier today (30 November 2013) to mark the start of the resort's five month long 2013-14 ski season on the same day that Canada's Lake Louise stages the first World Cup downhill of the Sochi Olympic season.

Best Pyrenees Opening For Years

Heavy snowfall in the Pyrenees over the past few weeks has allowed resorts on the French and Spanish sides of the mountain range, as well as in Andorra, to report some of the best opening conditions for years.

The snow is lying up to six feet (1.8m) deep on the upper slopes of the region and generally at least two feet (60cm) deep at the base.

Les Deux Alpes is opening on Saturday

The 2013/14 ski season is officially starting in Les 2 Alpes on Saturday 30 November. With 1.50 m of snow at 3,000m and 40cm in the resort, the lifts open this weekend with outstanding snow coverage. 33 slopes and 15 lifts will open with skiers able to ski from 3,400m down to the resort...

Paradiski Gravity - World first in highline 16th December 2013

To celebrate its 10th anniversary, Paradiski, the ski domain located in the French Alps [Savoie region] will host "Paradiski Gravity" a world first in highline, comprising a mainline suspended between the void of two cable cars, 380 metres high.

Paradiski Gravity will take place on the 16th December 2013.

List of Resorts Opening for Season Early Continues To Grow

Following the decision by Alpe d'Huez, Aspen, Whistler and Kitzbuhel to open several weeks early last weekend, more resorts have announced they'll be running the lifts earlier than expected this coming weekend.

French ski areas seem to dominate the list of unexpectedly early openings, thanks to the large snowfalls – typically of at least several feet – over the past week.

Resort in Pyrenees Opening Early Thanks to Heavy Snow

Baqueira Beret in the Spanish Pyrenees has announced it will open some terrain a week early due to the heavy snow that has been falling.

The resort, like most in the Pyrenees, had been due to open on Saturday, November 30th but will instead open this Saturday, November 23rd.

Chamonix Lift Operator Announces Six Year Upgrade Plan

The Compagnie du Mont Blanc lift company which runs several ski areas in the Chamonix Valley has announced proposals for major lift upgrades and improvements over the next five years (2014-19) as the first stage of a 40 year, €477m investment programme.

Big Name Resorts Opening Early – This Weekend

Perhaps the best news this week (apart from all the fresh snow!) is of early openings... A number of major resorts, on both sides of the Atlantic, have already announced that they will be starting their seasons earlier than planned thanks to the new snow.

The ‘New’ Biggest Ski Area In The USA

Two linked ski areas in Montana have come under common ownership this autumn and are now being jointly promoting themselves as the 'Biggest Ski Area in America.'

Big Sky Resort and its neighbour Moonlight Basin offer a combined 5,750 acres of terrain, served by 30 lifts.

Whistler Spend $18 Million On Lift Upgrades

Whistler Blackcomb is installing a new high speed chairlift on each of its two mountains this winter, the start of which is now only a few weeks away.

Whistler Mountain's Harmony high-speed, quad chairlift will be replaced with a new Doppelmayr high-speed, detachable, six-pack chairlift capable while Blackcomb Mountain will also see a lift upgrade with a high-speed quad chairlift going into a new area in the Crystal Zone, currently accessed by a fixed-grip triple chair.

Music Back In The Mountains

The number of music festivals and gigs planned for the coming ski season looks set to break records as the choice or music-loving snowsports fans continues to grow.

Almost all of the ever extending list of festivals from last season are back, including the big name acts for Ischgl at the start and end of season concerts, along with a few new options, and the first names of acts booked to perform, along with the on snow fun and après ski antics promised, are beginning to emerge.

Bruson Ski Area Integration With Verbier Imminent

The full integration of the Bruson ski area with the rest of the 4 Valleys is about to become a reality.

14 months after the project began, a new gondola making the link between the slopes of Verbier and those of its neighbour Bruson much quicker and easier will be complete, the lift is due to open next month.

Scottish Ski Season Starts Saturday

After a week of low temperatures and frequent snow showers across Scotland, Cairngorm Mountain has announced plans to open a ski run this Saturday, November 9th.

The ski area close to Aviemore, currently in the process of being sold from state to private ownership, intends to operate one trail along side the Ciste tow near the top of the ski runs.

French Ski Hosting Case Postponed

The appeal against a French court decision that 'ski hosting' (also known as 'social skiing') by British tour operator reps was illegal, due to be heard yesterday, 6 November 2013, has been postponed to next May.

The Court of Appeals in Chambery (France) agreed to defer the hearing about social skiing being illegal, to mid-May 2014, at the joint request of both the Ecole du Ski Français (ESF) and tour operator Le Ski which is the British tour operator that the French authorities took to court over the issue.

The idea is that these live fitness classes are broadcast over the internet so you can join in wherever you are. If the time they happen live doesn't fit your schedule, you can also access them at any time via an On Demand feature.

New Glades And Chairlift For Quebec Resort

Mont-Sainte-Anne in Quebec will open two new mountain sections this winter for glade skiing. This is a popular form of ski slope in North America – with thin tree cover.

One run will serve intermediates, the other is for experts, and both will connect into existing trails and end near a sugar shack, where traditional maple syrup treats are served. This brings the number of trails at Mont Sainte Anne to 69 in total.

Some Resorts in Alps Receive a Foot of Snow in Past 24 Hours

There's been increasingly heavy snowfall in the Alps over the weekend.

Falls of up to 20cm were reported over Saturday/Sunday and now up to 30cm for Sunday/Monday 24 hour periods at the glacier ski areas that are already open.

However with snowfall all the way down to the valleys in many parts of the Alps, this is clearly good pre-season news for all of Europe. Temperatures are typically in the -1 to -5C range.

Ski Safety Camps In Tirol

More and more resorts are offering freeride areas that have been made, hopefully, avalanche proof and more and more people are trying freeride in preference or in addition to sticking to the pistes.

Ever better equipment for this kind of skiing make heading off piste ever easier, but the safety issues have not changed, and it's important to know what you're doing and be able to recognise danger signs, as well as being able to do it.

New Dry Slope Opens in Scotland

A rare new dry slope complex has opened after a £1m re-development by Barr Construction of the Newmilns resort in East Ayrshire, Scotland.

Britain's newest ski slopes officially opened today (Saturday, November 2nd) at Newmilns Snow and Sports Complex on the day that heavy snow is forecast in the Cairngorms.

Canada's 2013-14 Ski Season Starts Today

Canada'a 2013-14 ski season got underway today (Friday, 1st November) with Mt Norquay ski area in Alberta opening a week earlier than expected. A second Canadian ski area, Nakiska, will open tomorrow (Saturday, November 2nd). Norquay had been snowmaking and received 17cm of fresh snowfall this week too.
