New Chairlifts For Whistler

We're not yet quite half way through winter 2012-13 but Whistler Blackcomb, which has not added any new lifts for a few years, has already announced plans for new 4 and 6 seater high speed chairlifts for NEXT winter, 2013-14.

Whistler Mountain's Harmony high-speed, quad chairlift will be replaced with a new Doppelmayr high-speed, detachable, six-seat chairlift and Blackcomb Mountain will see a high-speed quad chairlift going into a new area in the Crystal Zone, currently accessed by a fixed-grip triple chair.

South Tyrol Ski Safari

Following the success of a South Tyrol Ski safari last winter in which a group of intermediate skiers, covered over 200 kilometres and 37,000 vertical metres in a week, the organisers are planning a repeat visit to the huge Dolomiti Superski this winter, staying in different mountain top refuges each evening, fresh tracks every morning and fine dining thrown in, for good measure.

Ski Hire Company Helps Fight Disease

Ski Republic, which operates 40 ski rental shops in top French ski resorts as joined forces with ELA (www.ela-asso.org), a European charity fighting the disease of Leukodystrophies and is itself supported by the world famous French footballer Zinédine Zidanne.

The big news this week, in Europe at least, was from The Pyrenees and, even further South, Sierra Nevada in Spain. Both locations have seen substantial snowfall with resorts in The Pyrenees now beating The Alps for snow depth.

Big Snow In The Pyrenees

We are now three weeks in to an almost continuous truly epic snowfall in the Pyrenees which some resorts say is the biggest in a decade. More than three metres (10 feet) of snow has fallen so far right across the south western European mountain range, which prior to New year was having an only 'average' snow season. The snow is great news for the rest of the season but in the short term closed roads and led to many other logistical problems.

Altitude Comedy Festival 2013 Line Up Revealed

Most of the line-up for the Altitude Comedy Festival 2013 has just been announced with John Bishop the main new big name joining a long list of returning A-list comedians. However the organisers have tantalisingly announced that a major international star who has been selling out stadiums since rising to fame in the 1990s is set to be added to the line up – they just won't announce who it is until March 4th, a fortnight before the Festival kicks off.

Deep Purple to Play Ischgl Closing Concert

Deep Purple are to be the latest big name band to play Ischgl, following on from the concert by vintage german rock act The Scorpions at the start of the season.

Ischgl will bring the great band famed for rock anthems such as "Smoke On The Water" to the legendary Top of the Mountain Closing Concert at 2,300 metres above sea level, wrapping up the skiing season on 30 April in the heart of the Silvretta Arena on the Idalp.

Winter Segway Fun in Serfaus

Recently awarded the title of Best Ski Resort 2012 by the Mountain Management study, the resorts of Serfaus, Fiss and Ladis

(www.serfaus-fiss-ladis.at) are fairly unknown in the UK.

Only an hour from Innsbruck, the resorts offers extensive snow-sure skiing on 185km of piste on a joint pass.

Cancer Charity’s Ski Challenge

Skiers and boarders are being sought to take part in a new charity ski challenge in aid of charity Ski 4 Cancer (www.ski4cancer.org/ski-challenge).

The event staged in the French 3 Valleys resort of La Tania in March challenges individuals or teams will be challenged to ski either the vertical height of Mont Blanc (4807 metres) or Everest (8848 metres) in just one day, raising funding through donations for the charity.

World Snow Day Gets Bigger

World Snow Day (www.world-snow-day.com), a global initiative from the International Ski Federation to attract more children in to snowsports, will nearly double in size for its second staging this weekend with 435 events confirmed in 39 countries to take place this Sunday 20th January.

New Snow Toy: The Dual Board

Just as it seems every imaginable sliding device must have been invented by now, along comes the Dual Board. Founded in 2011, Dual Snowboards are, the manufacturers tell us, already "a recognisable part of the snowsports scene in the United States" and they're now moving in to Europe.

Snowmaking in Scotland

It has been the usual roller coaster of weather conditions for Scottish ski areas since the season started at the beginning of December

Although challenged by gales, blizzards and, according to one Cairngorm posting, wind chill down to -50C earlier this week, all five areas were able to open through the busy Christmas/New Year key business period, although there has not yet been enough snow for full top-to-bottom skiing at Cairngorm.

Snow Volleyball Anyone?

Anyone looking to see something a little different on the snow this Easter should head to St Anton in Austria where the 'Snow Volleyball Tour" rolls in to town on 5th and 6th April.

What the resort describes as, "the international volleyball elite" will be competing in customary style at the top station of the Rendl lifts at 2,030m above sea level for the 'King of the Snow' title.

Professor of Sport at the University of Bedfordshire, John Brewer, has been announced as the Chair of British Ski and Snowboard (BSS). In addition Professor Brewer, along with Mr John Foster and Mr Mark Lund will all become Independent Directors of the British National Governing Body for Snowsports.

6 Day Colorado Lift Pass Passes $700/£400 Mark

Six day lift passes covering Vail's four resorts in Colorado are currently being sold online at $510 on the company's snow.com site. The site says this advance online purchase price represents a $204 saving on the price you'd need to pay if you bought the ticket in resort at a ticket window for $714 which equals £440 This is believed to be the first time a six day ticket has gone above $700 (US)/£400 (UK)

New Ski Show For Birmingham

The team behind the UK's biggest ski magazine InTheSnow has announced they're launching a new ski show this autumn which will replace the old British Ski and Board Show after 24 years.

InTheSnow Live (www.inthesnowlive.com) is coming to the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham from 25-27 October 2013.

Nova Scotia’s Helmet Law For Adults Introduced

Nova Scotia has become what's believed to be the only geographic region in the world to legally enforce the wearing of ski helmets on the slopes of its three small ski areas.

The Eastern Canadian province introduced the law this winter as we previously reported it intended to. Other than the fact that the proposal has become law, the previously unknown fact of the penalty for non compliance has also become known – a $250 (Cdn) fine (about £156).

Dougie Crawford to Promote Scottish Ski Areas

Ski-Scotland announces a new partnership with Britain's No. 1 male World Cup Alpine skier, Dougie Crawford.

"We are really excited to be working with Dougie to promote Scottish snowsports," said Chair of Ski-Scotland Heather Negus. "He has agreed to give his time to work with us on specific promotions during the winter which we expect to appeal to our existing customers and also bring new skiers and boarders to Scotland's real snow and mountain ski areas. He will also be a superb role model for Scotland's young snowsports athletes and future athletes."

The J2Ski Snow Report - Week Ending January 4th 2013

The New Year has brought a bit of a change across The Alps, with blue skies, clear weather and an un-seasonal hint of Spring with unusually mild temperatures for much of the region.

This looks set to last for another week or so before temperatures fall back to their seasonal averages. Much of the French and Swiss Alps will remain largely clear, although heavy snow will push into Austria and the East this weekend.
