Week Ending November 1st, 2013

As temperatures fall across Europe - with a bit of snow - and the London Ski and Snowboard Show gets underway, it really is time to think skiing!

This weekend should see snow fall to around 2,000 metres in Austria and parts of France and Switzerland, with a mixed range of temperatures around the seasonal average.

Jungfrau Gets Social

The Jungfrau Winnercard, an electronic lift ticket valid at the famous Swiss ski region that incorporates the resorts of Grindelwald, Murren and Wengen, has been upgraded for the coming winter 2013/14 with a range of new hi-tec features.

The new version of the skipass will allow skiers the chance to create a personal diary charting experiences and videos to share with as few or as many fellow skiers and boarders as they like online.

Ski Sarajevo

30 years after the Sarajevo Winter Olympics (Torvil and Dean's finest hour) and two decades after the horrors of the war as Yugoslavia broke up, a new attempt is being made to market Bosnia and the ski slopes of Sarajevo in the UK.

New British company Ski Sarajevo (ski-sarajevo.com) is the first for several years to market ski holidays to the Bosnian's capital, and specifically Mt Jahorina located 28km from the city and one of three ski areas that hosted the Games three decades ago.

Indoor Ski Centre Projects Move Forward Around the World

Five years after the global economic crash seemed to put a halt to ever more extravagant indoor snow centre developments with ever longer indoor slopes (slopes up to 2km long were announced, so far the longest built is about a third of that), more and more projects have emerged during 2013 that indicate the 'indoor snow industry' is moving forward again.

Glenshee Announce Charity Fundraising Day

Scottish ski area Glenshee have announced a charity day in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support this winter on 8th March 2014, which has been named Go Ski Macmillan.

Planned events on the slopes include a 'ski in style' competition and a 'whackiest dressed on the day' competition with prizes for the best.

Cheese Rolling On Indoor Snow In Manchester

One of Britain's most eccentric pastimes took an unexpected twist as daredevils took part in the world's first Winter Cheese Rolling Championships on indoor snow at Chill Factore in Manchester.

A British tradition since the 15th Century which draws thousands to the village of Stilton, Chester and the infamous Cooper's Hill in Gloucestershire every year, its latest evolution saw hoards of adrenaline junkies throw themselves down a 180m indoor ski slope in the hope of catching the 8lb wheel of Cheshire Cheese.

The Last New Runs for Valmorel?

Valmorel, the especially family-friendly resort in the French Alps is installing a new chairlift for this coming winter and as a result will add two new runs.

Speaking about the new quad chairlift, a resort spokesperson told J2SKI, "It is a new route and probably the last new lift route created in the Grand Domaine."

Avoriaz Offers Child Ticket Pricing to Age 16

Avoriaz and the Portes du Soleil of which it is a part is promoting itself as the only resort in the French Alps to offer child pricing right up to age 15.

Most French resorts make children pay the full adult price from age 11, although many big areas offer family discounts when three or four family member buy the same kind of ticket together, which in some cases extends child discounts up to age 16 or even 18.

New at Kitzbuhel

Kitzbuhel in the Austrian Tirol has announced yet another big spend on a new hi tec lift system for the coming winter as part of its annual "tens of millions of Euros" spend.

Taking its hourly uplift capacity through the 90,000 sph mark, the new €12m, 10 seat Wagstättbahn gondola in the Jochberg sector will open on 7th December 2013, complete with the now obligatory heated seating.

Snow To Fall in London This Month and Next

Two real-snow events on the streets of London are planned this weekend and next month.

'London Snow' including the Slide2Sochi Roadshow (www.slide2sochi.org.uk) hits Covent Garden less than four months before the 2014 Winter Olympics. It will aim to turn Covent Garden into a winter wonderland and gives people a chance to try skiing and snowboarding on a 5 metre by 10 metre real snow slope from Thursday 24th October to Sunday 27th October.

New ‘Skywalk’ Under Construction Above Chamonix

Anyone who has taken the cable car up to the Aiguille du Midi, located at 3842m, high above Chamonix, or even shuffled along the arête from there to the start of the Vallee Blanche run, will be all to aware of the long drop to the valley below.

A glass balcony sticking out in to the void is now under construction and due to open this winter to provide a very visual reminder of just how big the world's largest lift-served vertical drop actually is.

Jungfrau Announce Deep Purple Gig

The Jungfrau region in Switzerland have announced rock legends Deep Purple, who were formed in 1967 and whose hits include 'Smoke on the Water,' as the headline act of SnowpenAir, the country's biggest winter music event, on the 5th and 6th April 2014.

Les 2 Alpes Readies For Special 10 Day Autumn Ski Opening Next Week

Tignes re-opened for its eight month long ski season last weekend with perfect timing as snow dumped down.

It's the only French are open until mid-November, except that Les 2 Alpes, which just sent us some pictures of its slopes in pristine condition with fresh powder, is opening from 26 October to 3rd November for a special week of festivities and glacier ski gear testing, perfectly timed to coincide with the October school holidays. It then closes for the rest of November before re-opening for the winter season on 30 November, until 26 April 2014.

...the Tirol sent a film crew to the Kaunertal Opening on Sunday and made this video snow report...

What perfect timing for the 28th Kaunertal Opening, after more than half a metre of snow fell in parts of Tirol within a 24 hour period.

Week Ending October 11th, 2013

For our second weekly round-up of the new season, we have - yes - a (slightly) snowy forecast!

Temperatures are falling across The Alps today, ending the recent warm spell, and will be well below the seasonal average in parts of the Northern Alps for a few days. Precipitation is expected this afternoon and overnight and may fall as snow right down to 1,000 metres or so in parts; although the snow line will be around 1,500 metres generally.

Ski In Chamonix To Raise Funds for MS Charity

The MS Trust's Monster Ski challenge is back this winter after taking 2013 off and will be taking place in Chamonix for the first time next March 16-20, 2014

The MS Trust fundraiser aims to raise money for the charity that trains specialist nurses and provides information for people living with multiple sclerosis.

Thousand Try Snowsports At Events Across UK

50 Years Of Dry Slope Skiing

This is a special weekend in the history of British skiing as it marks the anniversary of 50 years since the first permanent dry ski slope opened, at Torquay in Devon.

There had been earlier dry slopes, a temporary one in what was to become Lillywhites store in London's Piccadilly in the 1950s and others for shows and exhibitions dating back at least to the 1920s, but this was the first permanent slope that anyone could use, and it's still operating today with a healthy local ski club.

Second Pair of Swiss Resorts Linking Up For 13-14 Season

A new cable car connection between the neighbouring ski areas of Zinal and Grimentz in the Swiss Val d'Anniviers will create a 120km ski domain within the wider valley pass this December.

The link is one of an unprecedented five such link-ups announced in the Alps this coming winter, including two in Austria (Flachau to St Johnann im Pongau and Lech to Warth/Scrocken), another in Switzerland (Arosa to Lenzerheide) and one at Folgaria in Italy.

New Lift and New Run For Arabba/Marmolada

Arabba/Marmolada is adding another kilometre of piste to the huge Dolomiti Superski Pass this winter with a new ski run.

The new slope "Rutort" an intermediate red, will descend 970 metres from "Bec de Roces" and the Campolongo Pass descending 228 vertical metres at an average 24% steepness.
