Colorado Ski Resorts Divided On Whether to Allow Retail Drug Sales This Season

Published : 28-Sep-2013 01:18

Colorado passed a law in November last year which allowed people aged over 21 to grow and own a small amount of cannabis each year, and to gift small amounts to friends too.

The law also allowed for cannabis to be sold, within these volume limits, through licensed retailers to member of the public, but crucially a decision on whether to license retailers to sell the drugs 'for recreational purposes' is being left up to individual Colorado towns to decide.

Social Skiing in France This Winter After All

Published : 20-Sep-2013 07:18

The battle between British tour operators in France and the 'French authorities' in some of the country's top ski resorts, back by the all-powerful Ecole du ski Francais (ESF) has taken a new turn.

As we reported in the spring, French Authorities took action last winter against several British Tour Operators whose staff had been working as ski hosts, providing 'social skiing' – essentially showing skiers and boarders around ski resorts ion arrival, sticking to easy runs, pointing out good routes, how to avoid queues, best places to eat and so on.

Sir Richard Branson, not one to stay on the side lines, decided it was time to set another world record yesterday. He was in the water at the Virgin Kitesurfing Armada, a more than suitable event name considering he joined 317 other kitesurfers as they attempted, successfully, to break the world record for the 'Largest Parade of kitesurfers' ever assembled.

Early Morning Skiing in France

Published : 15-Sep-2013 04:31

Smaller resorts across the alps can now offer a six day lift pass for as little half the price of their larger neighbours, and indeed for less than many Eastern European resorts which have built a reputation for being cheap and cheerful.

La Bresse Hohneck, for example the biggest ski area in North Eastern France (making it the closest to drive to from Blighty) has only 450 metres of vertical and a little over 20k of piste but its six day lift pass is half that of bigger areas further south at 124.70 Euros for six days low season.

J2Ski Monthly Snow Report - September 2013

Published : 13-Sep-2013 04:20

http://www.j2ski.com/snow_forecast/

Introduction

A little later than planned, but here's our round-up of where to ski this month...

September is when we can officially start to get excited about the coming ski season. The first of the pre-Sochi Olympics international competitions have taken place in the southern hemisphere and the first snowfalls of the season have happened in the Alps and the Rockies. The southern hemisphere's 2013 season is also starting to wind down, adding to the feeling that the north is next, although its still snowing heavily in many areas, with several New Zealand resorts reporting 25cm of new snow in 24 hours in the last days of August. Heavy snowfall adding up to 15cm to glaciers in the Alps in the last week of August helped get pulses racing too.

How Many Grammes of CO2 Would You Like With Your Ski Pass?

Published : 08-Sep-2013 08:39

A ski lift operator in France may be the first to publish CO2 emissions along side prices for its lift tickets for 2013-14.

The Sybelles region in the country's Maurienne region is little known in the UK but has quietly become one of the largest in Europe over the past decade with around 10 small to medium sized villages sharing a ski area of some 350km. One sector of this with over 300km of pistes is inter-connected by lifts and piste.

With the start of the ski season for most resorts now three months away, most are beginning to publish their lift-pass prices for the coming winter.

Inevitably prices are creeping up by a few Euros in most cases, but it's noticeable that ever more resorts – particularly in France – are copying the US model of 'fluid pricing.'
