Last Chance of 2013 To Ski On Six Continents As Snow Falls in North and South Hemispheres

The 2013 ski season ends in Africa and North America after this weekend, as the run up to the northern hemisphere's 2013-14 winter gets underway.

In Africa the southern hemisphere ski areas of Afriski in Lesotho and Tiffindell in South Africa will both run their lifts for the last time this weekend before calling it a day for 2013.

New Multi-Million Euro Restaurants In The Austrian Alps

The top Austrian ski areas seem to be moving ahead of much of the competition in terms of their investment in state-of-the-art lifts and comprehensive snowmaking systems, and now there's an increasing spend on remarkable mountain restaurants.

Solden and Hintertux are among the resorts announcing flash new multi-million Euro dining options opening for the coming winter.

How to Summit The Matterhorn And Return In Under Three Hours

Those who have moaned about how long it takes to get from the bottom to the top of the world's second biggest lift served vertical up to the Klein Matterhorn above Zermatt in Switzerland (and Cervinia in Italy's Aosta Valley just across the border), should feel fairly awe-inspired by the achievements of Spanish mountain runner Kalian Jornet who has just run and climbed up the Matterhorn proper, and got back down, in under three hours, smashing the old speed record.

Val Thorens gains two 5-Star Hotels!

Val Thorens, Europe's highest ski resort, keeps moving upmarket whilst retaining its simplicity.

A new five-star hotel is opening in December, with a gastronomic restaurant. The Fitz Roy hotel is becoming a five-star and new luxury apartments with a concierge service are also opening this season.

New Scheme Aims to Encourage More People to Take Up Snowsports

A new initiative to try to go more people to try skiing or boarding in England has been launched by Snowsport England with the hope of capitalising on an anticipated increase in snowsports due to the Sochi Olympics.

The Go Ski Go Board initiative aims to make trying snowsports for the first time simpler, less intimidating and more affordable for first timers.

Set Backs For North Korean Ski Area

Those hoping to ski at a new ski area under construction in North Korea which leader Kim Jong Un has commanded should be asia's largest and which should be created from scratch within a year have had several set backs.

Firstly bad weather including torrential rain led to damage to the construction site and flooding of the base area last month and now lift manufacturers in Austria, France and Switzerland have declined orders valued at around £5m from North Korea for ski lifts for the new resort for fear of breaking international sanctions which forbid the sale of 'luxury items' to North Korea.

James ‘Woodsy’ Woods Wins in New Zealand

21-year-old British freeskier James 'Woodsy' Woods from Sheffield, current slopestyle World Cup champion ( you don't get to write that very often for a British snow sports athlete), got his 2013-14 Olympic season off to a good start last night with victory in the rail jam competition held as part of the Audi Quattro Winter Games in New Zealand.

Alpe d'Huez Offers Summer Skiing

Despite projects such as the proposed year-round Jumbo Glacier ski area in Canada, the number of ski areas in the northern hemisphere offering summer skiing has been in decline since the turn of the century with the numbers that at one point were close to 40 now down to less than 20.

British Ski and Snowboard Stars ready for action in New Zealand

Over the next month many of Great Britain's ski and snowboard stars will be competing in New Zealand across the disciplines of Ski and Snowboard Halfpipe, Ski and Snowboard Slopestyle and Alpine Skiing.

For Great Britain's freestyle skiers the FIS World Cup Halfpipe kicks off the NZ Winter Games in Cardrona on Friday (16th August) with the finals taking place on Saturday 17th August. GB Sochi 2014 hopeful Murray Buchan (21, Edinburgh) will lead the charge with Peter Speight (20, Sheffield) and Rowan Cheshire (17, Stoke) – GB's one female entrant in halfpipe - hoping to come into form.

Avalanche Victim Prince Dies After 18 Month Coma

Prince Johan Friso of the Netherlands has died 'unexpectedly' due to complications after spending 18 months in a coma after being caught in an avalanche in the Austrian Arlberg.

The 44 year old prince had been in hospital in London for much of the time since his accident in Lech in February last year when he was buried beneath the snow for around 15 minutes. He had been moved back to the Netherlands last month.

Free Ski Pass (And Breakfast) on Méribel Vallée’s Opening Day

Méribel Vallée, the 'new' name that Méribel's marketing team would prefer what we once called Méribel, has announced a special promotion for opening day on December 7th.

Early rises should head to the Tourist Information Office in Méribel-Mottaret where the first 100 skiers to present themselves will be rewarded with a free Méribel Vallée ski pass and breakfast.
