Snow Golf Hits Les Gets

Les Gets Golf Course
If you're arriving in Les Gets this weekend, what better way to end your first day on the slopes on the Portes du Soleil than a quick round of après-ski snow golf?
Street golfing started in the 90's in Germany and then started appearing in other European countries and in America. Les Gets gives it a new twist by playing on snowy streets from 5:30pm on Sunday, March 6th. It's the second time the contest has been staged.

Squaw Valley USA
Squaw Valley has had an incredible amount of snowfall over the past few weeks, reporting another three feet in the past 48 hours. It has been one of the snowiest places on earth this winter, thamks in part to the La Nina effect.

High Five Returns To Verbier

If you ever want to meet some of the world's best skiers, past and present, in the flesh, then the Verbier High Five on 2nd April is the event to aim for.
The weekend event mixes top class ski racing with plenty of partying. Verbier High Five begins in the resort's Place Centrale at 6pm on Friday 1st April, with an Opening Party and the presentation of the racers. Participation in the races is open to all and registration is now open at www.verbierhighfivebycarlsberg.com. The best of the amateur racers will make up pro-am teams for the Parallel Slalom.

Winter 2010-11 only just seems to have started and already we're looking to 'end of season events.'
Well not quite, but there do some to be more music themed events and festivals coming up over the next two months than ever before as resorts continue the process of offering more than just skiing and boarding.

€100m To ‘Triple Size’ Of Bansko

Bansko, which is currently staging a leg of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup has announced plans to nearly triple the size of its ski area with a €100m investment adding 200km of piste to the area's existing 130km.
The plans involve bringing in the adjoining villages of Razlog and Dobrinishte which currently have small rudimentary ski areas to create by far the largest ski area East of the Alps.

Skier Walks Up 2 Million Feet, To Ski Down

A Canadian back country skier has set a new record for walking up mountains, then skiing down them. Revelstoke-based ski mountaineer Greg Hill has completed his quest to climb and ski 2,000,000 vertical feet (609,600 metres) within a calendar year with two days to spare.

Pyrenees Gets The Snow

Baqueira Beret Yesterday (24 Feb 11)[/b]
It's the Pyrenees turn for heavy snowfall with resorts reporting up to a metre of new snow in the past 48 hours, and accumulations of up to 1.35m (4.5 feet) over the course of the past week.
Spain's leading resort of Baqueira Beret is one of the big winners with its snow depth increasing from 125 to 195cm.

Snow Forecast Summary - 24th February 2011

The big news of the week is that, at long last, significant snows have fallen across the French Alps.
Widespread falls have improved conditions right across Europe, hitting The Alps, The Pyrenees and The Dolomites alike with accumulations exceeding half a metre in many resorts. France, Italy, Austria, Switzerland and Germany have all been reporting powder conditions at times.

Apps that can tell you where you are at a ski resort, what's happening on the apres ski scene in a few hours time, which ex-friends or people you met 20 years ago and had hoped to never see again but agreed to be a Facebook friend too are actually in the same ski resort as you for the week or can call the blood wagon to your coordinates if you get injured or simply tell you where the nearest loo is are ten-a-penny now.

The Need To Speed

Hitting 110mph on the roads of North America isn't wise if you don't want to appear on one of those real life TV cop shows, but it is legal in certain circumstances on the ski slopes of Canada. One such scenario is the 2011 Subaru Velocity Challenge (velocitychallenge.com) at Sun Peaks Resort which takes place next week from March 3-6, 2011.

World Record Kilt Skiing Attempt At Aviemore Again

A world record attempt to get the most number of people skiing together simultaneously wearing kilts is set to be repeated on the first weekend on March at Cairngorm ski area above Aviemore in Scotland.
The organisers hope to attract 400 kilt-wearing skiers and boarders to the slopes on March 5th and get them all heading downhill in one long line together, beating last year's world record 235 people (it's not clear if any other resorts are challenging for the record…).

Heavy Snow In The Alps

Chamonix - got snow
The long awaited heavy snowfall has arrived in the Alps over the past 48 hours after a few flurries at the end of last week.
The first areas to benefit were around the French/Italian border when Bardonecchia and Courmayeur in Italy and Montgenevre and Serre Chevalier in France each reported receiving 20-30cm (up to a foot) of new snow in 24 hours by Friday.

Anyone with a mad desire to wear bright neon leg warmers and stone wash their salopettes will be delighted to hear that 80s icon, 'The Hoff' – a man who just won't go away, is appearing on stage in Laax this Saturday night.
David Hasselhof who rose to fame through Saturday evening favourites like Knight Rider and Baywatch in the pre Simon Cowell or Ant and Dec era will be spinning a few 80 hits as part of the last leg of his 'The Hoff is Back' tour with the Baywatch Soundsystem at the Swiss resort's Riders Palace venue this weekend on the night of Saturday 26t, February, 2011. The party begins at 9pm in venue which can hold up to 1,000 crazed Hoff fans. party hard 80s fans.

Three Skiers Murdered At Russian Ski Area

It's not looking too great for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics after terrorists attacked a tourist minibus heading to the ski slopes at Elbrus, Europe's highest mountain and located in the southern Russian Caucasus area. The men opened fire on the Russian skiers, murdering two with four more taken to hospital where one more died.

At long last there has been some fresh snowfall today in the Western Alps.
Although fairly limited in spread, along the French / Italian border, two leading resorts of Bardonecchia in Italy and Montgenevre in France reported 20cm each of new snow in the past 24 hours.

International Ski Federation Report Steps To Beat “Aggressive Snow” Issues In Racing

With the Alpine Skiing World Championships underway in Garmisch, the International Ski Federation (FIS) have chosen to update media on their long-term plans to improve safety for racers on the slopes.
In particular this time the FIS's Injury Surveillance System (ISS) which launched five years ago in January 2006, has reported on a research project that remains in progress under the direction of the University of Salzburg.

With the giant ISPO trade show in Germany just over, the big manufacturers are starting to make public their 2011-12 season lines of new hardware innovations public.
Inevitably they're all "major breakthroughs" and "groundbreaking" etc (Actually, now I think about it, do we really want to break the ground with our ski gear?). But picking through the marketing hype there do seem to be some interesting ideas in there.

Top hip hop music act Cypress Hill will be performing live in Laax on Saturday 19th February
The event is part of a weekend of celebrations from Thursday 17 – Sunday 20 February with skiing under the full moon followed by the gig.
On Friday, 18 February it is the much celebrated full moon night in Laax with the mountain lifts operating until 11pm and the mountain bar at Curnius hosting DJs or live bands during the evening.

Manchester Football Team Mascots Meet On The Snow

The mascots of Manchester's two best known football teams got competitive on the indoor snow at Manchester Chill Factore yesterday ahead of the teams meeting for a much anticipated derby match this weekend.
Man U's 'Fred the Red' and Man City's 'Moonchester' were welcomed to the venue by Chill Factore's own mascot 'Chille the Snowboy'.

Whistler Celebrates One Year Since the Olympics By Opening Sliding Centre To Public

Whistler has announced it will open its sliding centre to the general public this month, a year after the facility hosted Olympic competition.
The 'Whistler Sliding Centre' launches its 'Public Sliding Sport Experience Program' which will give resort visitors the chance to experience Skeleton or Bobsleigh racing. For those just wanting to watch, there's a new interpretive centre to explore.

Adelboden Gets A New Sports Centre

Fun In Adelbodden, Now Indoors As Well As Out!
Adelboden ski area in Switzerland will open an impressive new ice stadium to add to its list of off-slope attractions this month.
Named the Adelboden Leisure and Sports Arena it finally opens to the public in mid-February. The new facility includes curling rinks as well as distinctly non icy bowling alley, climbing hall and restaurants.
