Laax Tops The Million Visits Mark Again

Laax has reported it received over a million visitors from 38 different countries this winter, making it one of the Swiss resort's most successful to date.

Britta Kaula, Head of Communication and Marketing of the Weisse Arena Gruppe said "It's been a really great season in LAAX and as always we are sad to see it end. There have been a number of highlights this season including a live gig by Dizzee Rascal which kicked off the season in style, being awarded Wallpaper's best "new ski resort" and this year's BRITS and Burton European Open. But next year will be even better, with construction of our new, indoor, freestyle training centre – the first in The Alps – already underway!"

Cairngorm Enters Last full Week Of The Season

Scotland's Cairngorm Mountain is entering its last full week of operations this season, which is widely regarded as having been the best for a generation. The season won't end with the May bank holiday however, as the ski centre above Aviemore will continue to operate at weekends through May as conditions permit. Glencoe is also open at weekends at present, the other three Scottish centres have closed for the season.

Copper Mountain Tops Ski Holidaymakers Satisfaction Survey

TUI Ski, the company which owns Britain's largest ski tour operator Crystal, as well as other leading brands Thomson, First Choice and Flexiski, has announced the five resorts its customers were the most impressed by in 2009-10.

Copper Mountain in Colorado is the most popular overall, although as the company sends a limited number of clients there, the verdict is not based on the number of passengers. The company believes Val di Fassa would probably triumph if the number of forms returned was factored.

International Competitions In New Zealand This Summer

Lake Wanaka ski fields in New Zealand take centre stage this summer when several international ski and snowboard events roll in for the southern hemisphere's winter season.

Young snowboarders and skiers from across the world will descend on Wanaka in August (19-31) for the 2010 FIS Snowboard & Freestyle Junior World Championships.

Copper Mountain Spends on Snowmaking

Copper Mountain in Colorado will spend $6m (US) in off-season improvements for next winter, much of the money going on a 25% increase in the resort's snowmaking capacity.

The new snowmaking will be spread throughout the mountain, one of the world's 10 highest commercial ski areas, with new systems being installed in the Timberline area, adding significant intermediate terrain.

Snowmaking Expansion For Hauser Kaibling

Hauser Kaibling, part of Schladming's ski area in Austria, has seen a 6 million Euro investment in new infrastructure this season, much of it spent on new snowmaking.

31 pieces of new snow guns have been purchased, making a total of 167 canons for its 37km of piste and increasing capacity to 11,000 cubic metres of snow per hour. The pumping stations have also been upgraded and a new water line installed from the River Enns.

World Ski & Snowboard Festival happening in Whistler

The ten-day long 15th annual TELUS World Ski & Snowboard Festival is underway at Whistler.

The Festival, which runs from April 16 to 25 is traditionally the biggest snow event on the planet in late April each year, and this season has the double bonus of being the ultimate after-party after the Olympics, and is also being staged at the end of what is so far the resort's second-snowiest-ever season, with over 14.3m (47 feet) of snow fallen.

Crystal Mountain Add New Gondola And Terrain Park For 2010-11

Crystal Mountain resort in North Western USA will add a new Doppelmayr gondola for next winter. Work is due to begin on the new lift on Monday, April 19th the day after the resort closes for the season.

The gondola's base terminal will be where the current Mountain Market/Bumps Espresso is located and bring passengers to the top of Rainier Express and the Summit House.

Mammoth Mountain Extends Ski Season To US Independence Day – July 4th

Thanks to good snowfall throughout the 2009/10 winter season, Mammoth Mountain in California has announced that it will extend its winter operations for daily skiing and riding to July 4, 2010.

Mammoth Mountain has received over 41 feet (493 inches) of snowfall this season including more than three feet of snow in the first week of April. With a current base depth of 11 feet to 15 feet of snow, Mammoth is experiencing the best snowfall season since the record breaking 2005/06 season, when over 50 feet of snow fell on the mountain.

Tignes Offer 175 Euro Deal For Last Week Of Season

Tignes is offering a week's accommodation, lift ticket and apres ski for 175 Euros on the last week of their season – the first week of May.

The special offer, valid from May 1 – 8, and including seven nights accommodation and six day lift ticket, is priced at less than the cost of a six day lift ticket alone at the high altitude French resort during the main season.

Saas Fee Readies for 28th Allalin Race Over 1800m Vertical

Saas-Fee will stage its annual end of season Allalin Races down the Allalinhorn from 16th to 18th April this week.

The race course starts at 3,600 metres above sea level, and the finish line is 1,800 metres below, at the Kalbermatten sports ground. The high-speed, 9 km (six mile) course is certainly no easy challenge, although there are several speed options available, top speed isn't essential in several rare categories.

Major New Ski Centre Under Construction in Turkey

A new ski centre is being built in Turkey in readiness for the 2011 Universiade Winter Games which will be staged there next February in the ancient city of Erzurum.

The new resort will stage Super-G, Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super Combined Alpine ski races.

FIS Commissions Study In To Ways Of Making Ski Racing Safer

The University of Salzburg has begun a three year study in to all the dangers involved in Alpine ski racing at the behest of the International Ski Federation (FIS). The move follows an initiative by the world's leading ski racers to highlight some of the dangers they think exist and could be reduced in their sport.

Japanese-Themed Freestyle Snow Event in Les 2 Alpes

Les 2 Alpes will stage the Kumi Yama snowsports event from 2nd to 4th July. Following in the footsteps of the Tahitian inspired Taravena Freestyle event, this new Japanese-style event welcomes professional Freestyle skiers and boarders from all over Europe, and Japan. Two competitions (slopestyle and superpipe) will be held over the three days.

CairnGorm Open Daily Until May 2010

CairnGorm's best season for decades continues with 40cm of fresh snow in the past week, one of the world's biggest accumulations.

The Scottish ski area saw over 2000 skiers take to the slopes on Good Friday to check out the recent fall of snow, which was perfectly timed to provide excellent snow cover across the mountain for Easter skiing and boarding.

Skier Sets World Record 60,874 Vertical Metres In A Day

Skiing world record addict Oliver Kern has set two new world records, clocking up a 60,874 vertical metres (200,000 feet) skied in one day and in the process 5,550 (18.210 ft) vertical meters during one hour during a long day on the slopes of Speikboden resort in Italy.

More People Know About Whistler Thanks To The Olympics

Early results from the 2010 Winter Games in Whistler show that the resort's role as Host Mountain Resort has led to significant gains in international awareness according to the Canadian resort, "...a critical element in growing visitation over the coming years."
