New On-Snow Facilities at Engelberg

Central Swiss ski area Engelberg has announced lots of ski are enhancements this winter, including a wide range of alternative snow sports centres as well as better facilities for families and first timers.

The new Sliding Park on Mount Titlis will be located beneath the sun terrace of Hotel Trübsee and will feature a tubing park, and toboggan run where you can rent a 'Zipfel' Bob sledge or Snake-Gliss (articulated sledge). A 120m long magic carpet lift has also been installed to get users back up the slopes.

Plans To Save Hillend Ski Slope Take Shape

Plans to save the UK's original big downhill ski centre at Hillend, the Midlothian Snowsports Centre above Edinburgh in Scotland, are taking shape.

Hillend was the training centre where most of Britain's most successful downhill racers trained over the past three decades and more and has one of the world's longest artificial slope surfaces, but earlier this year it was announced the centre, which is publically owned, was under threat with operational losses of about £500,000 per year.

Australia’s Ski Areas Celebrate Best August Snowfall For 25 Years

Australia's leading ski areas are currently being dumped on and are reporting the best August snowfalls for more than two decades. Much of the snow has been falling in the past week.

"Yesterday we smashed the record books with some of the best snow the mountain has seen in years! The resort received 34cms of snow, rendering it as the best August snowfall recorded since 1985!" said an excited spokesperson for Mt Buller.

Les 2 Alpes Announces October Snow Events

With the summer ski season ending in France, there are now a few weeks when the country will have no ski slopes open before Tignes re-opens in mid-September. It then operates more-or-less alone for nearly 10 weeks until all the other French ski areas begin to open in late November and early December.

FIS Junior Championships in New Zealand

Over 300 of the world's elite junior snow sports athletes from some 30 nations are in Lake Wanaka, New Zealand, this week to compete in the inaugural joint FIS Snowboard & Freestyle Junior World Championships which began last Thursday 19th August and continue to Tuesday the 31st.

Levi To Offer Free Skiing In May

The leading Finnish ski resort of Levi has already announced it will offer free skiing at the end of its very long season – next May (2011).

The resort, which recently opened a spectacular new water park, expects its 2010-11 ski season will begin by early November, this year and that it will last to May 8th, 2011.

Big Spend And Name Tweak For Park City Resort

One of the three ski areas at Park City in Utah has announced a major investment in new on-mountain equipment this winter and that it is going to drop the 'The' from its name. Now known simply as 'Canyons', or 'Park City's Canyons' if you will, the resort was formerly known as 'The Canyons' and before that several other names. It came under new ownership recently after more than a decade as the flagship resort of the now defunct American Skiing Company. They took the Canyons from being very much Park City's third ski area, behind Deer Valley and Park City Mountain Resort, in to one of North America's 10 biggest resorts with a fleet of modern chairlifts.

New Gondola in Saalbach Hinterglemm

Saalbach Hinterglemmm Leogang in Austria, one of the country's largest resorts with 200 kilometres of piste and 55 modern lifts, will add a new gondola this winter.

The T-bar lift located near to the Funpark will be dramatically upgraded through replacement by a modern eight person gondola with heated seats and the capacity to transport 2,800 people per hour with the total length of the lift being doubled. The top station will be situated above the 'Gerstreit' reservoir. As well as the lift construction, the floodlit piste and night park will also be expanded and enhanced.

Club Med Opens In China’s Top Resort

The famous French holiday village group Club Med has announced it will open its first resort in China this winter, at the country's top resort of Yabuli.

Club Med has run ski holiday villages at resorts around the world for many decades with ski areas including Copper Mountain in Colorado, La Plagne in France and Wengen in Switzerland all home to Club Med villages either now or in the past. The company also pioneered ski holiday packages to Japan before other European or North American companies arrived with their village at Sahoro.

Perisher Rename Superpipe After Olympic Hero

It's been a good few weeks at Perisher with lots of fresh snow and virtually all of the resort's terrain open.

In addition this weekend Olympic Halfpipe Gold Medallist and Perisher Ambassador Torah Bright is being honoured at Australioa's largest ski area with the resort's Superpipe officially re-named "Brights' Pipe". The dedication honours not only Torah but also her brother Ben who is her coach and a long-time Perisher snowboarding athlete.

New Chairlift At les 2 Alpes

Les 2 Alpes – which is currently one of the two French resorts open for summer skiing – is building a new quad chairlift, as part of a raft of upgrades for winter 2010-11.

The 2.7 million euro POMA built lift will improve access to the La Fee sector. The 474m long lift rises 164 vertical metrtes and will carry a capacity of 2,000 people per hour.

New Chairlifts at Pralognan

Pralognan La Vanoise in the French Savoie region will see one of the biggest infrastructure upgrades in the country this winter when the resort installs new quad and six-seater chairlifts.

Pralognan will replace the old Edelweiss chair with a high speed detachable six-seat lift and the double Chaberne chair with the new POMA built quad.

Big Snowfall Down Under

Australian ski resorts have seen their biggest snowfalls of winter 2010 so far over the past week, with two resorts – Mt Hotham and Perisher – both reporting around 60cm (two feet) accumulated taking average snow depth above the metre (3.3 foot) mark.

Tamarack may re-open for 2010-11

Tamarack ski area in Idaho may partially re-open for skiing net winter if home owner's plans come to fruition.

The resort went out of business 18 months ago at the height of the global financial crisis, oweing banks and other creditors several hundred million dollars and the state of Idaho at least $250,000 in annual lease fees for land where the ski slopes are located.

Monster Ski Charity Challenge Seeks Participants

A charity that supports people living with multiple sclerosis is looking for skiers and snowboarders to sign up for its upcoming Monster Ski event in France next February.

Monster Ski is an endurance challenge to ski 90,000 vertical feet over the three days and is organized exclusively for the Multiple Sclerosis Trust for skiers of intermediate standard and above. Participants will be skiing the vertical of Mount Everest every day for the three days in Tignes from 3rd to 7th February 2011.

Serre Chevalier Adds Six Seater chair

Upgrades at Serre Chevalier will continue this season with a new six-seater chairlift to improve the ski experience in the Villeneuve and Monêtier sectors.

The new lift is the latest of several added following the ski area's take over by the Compagnie des Alpes which operates many of France's largest ski areas.

Russian Officials Visit Pitztal To See All Weather Snowmaking

Senior members of the Russian Olympic Organising Committee were in Austria last month to witness a demonstration of the IDE all weather snow-making system.

The Russians are looking at ways to prevent any danger of a repeat of the issues faced by Cypress Mountain in British Columbia last winter when the ski area struggled to provide enough snow to build terrain features for freestyle event during an unusually warm spell of weather when conventional snowmaking equipment could not operate.

Big White To Introduce Rotating ‘Safe Zones’ On Their Slopes

Big White Ski Resort in British Columbia, Canada has announced plans to introduce rotating "Family/Seniors Skiing and Snowboarding Zones" next season.

Three runs will be selected each day from the resort's long inventory of pistes and they will be only accessible, on that day, through a temporary gate. Clearly sign posted they'll also have extra slope watch and ski patrol to ensure that speed and safe skiing and riding are monitored.
