A New Black Run For Pila

Published : 30-Nov-2010 10:24

Pila in Italy's Aosta Valley has opened a rare new black run this winter starting from Platta de Grevon (2700m) and descending to Plan De L'Eyve. Access to the run is provided by a conveyor lift which leaves from the Couis 1 arrival station. This new lift is housed within a perspex cover, forming a tunnel which is likely to be largely covered by snow through the winter for minimal visual impact, as well as protecting users from extremes of weather.

The Early Bird Gets The Snow

Published : 28-Nov-2010 05:20

Serfaus

Austrian resort Serfaus has a big opening party planned from next weekend and this season will launch a new, "breakfast skiing" option from 15 December 2010

"We are all familiar with the phenomenon – first thing in the morning you push aside the curtain in your hotel room, excitedly that the snow god has deposited his white freight generously in the night. And indeed he has, hiding the entire Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis resort under a huge heap of icing sugar. You can't wait to plunge into the fleecy stuff, to surf down the mountain with skis or snowboard, to be at one with the elements. Only the mountain, the powder snow and me. You eat your breakfast hastily and soon you're at the valley station, waiting impatiently for the cable car to start at 9am." said a resort spokesperson.

North American Resorts Seek To Outdo Each Other for Best Of The Good News

Surfing Alpine Meadows

That coquettish minx 'La Nina' (a weather trend not an X Factor candidate) is being credited with huge snowfalls in western North America over the past week and resorts there are trying to outdo each other with their claims as to which has the most exciting news as a result. It's not all good though, the sad story of the first avalanche death of the season has been reported.

Far be it from J2ki.com to try to cash in on the happy event that is the Royal Wedding with some tacky and tenuous association with ski holidays, but several PR companies have been quick to point out that with the nuptials coming in the same week as the late Easter there's the potential for an 11 day ski holiday for three days of annual leave time, assuming you get Good Friday off.

Ski All Day, Dance all Night

Snowbombing

Festivals in the Alps have become an ever bigger attraction for skiers and boarders in recent years. All taking place in the last month or so of the season, when the skies are sunny and the temperatures warmer, the idea is that you have fun with lots of like-minded people on the snow all day then party together all night. The energy requirements, and the music involved, means that the festivals mostly appeal to the younger crowd.

Winter Underway En Francais

Published : 19-Nov-2010 10:15

Val Thorens

For some reason France has lagged behind the other major Alpine nations for its pre-season ski opportunities. Tignes, once open for 12 months of the year, still manages to stay open for about nine months and has been stoically offering France's only outdoor lift-served snow since mid-September (there's also the world's biggest indoor run up at Amneville in the north east of the country), but while half-a-dozen or more areas have been open since October in each of Austria, Italy and Switzerland, France has stuck with just the one choice. Well apart from Les 2 Alpes opening for the October English and French school holidays week only anyway.

You'll find Europe's highest pub is in fact an Irish one in Val Thorens and even over in Japan where MacDonalds have not yet cracked the ski scene, there's an Irish pub in downtown Niseko.

The three ski areas that surround Utah's ski town The Canyons together offer more skiable terrain than any other ski resort in North America, it's just a shame there's no sign that they'll ever work together to such an extent that they'll cross the narrow boundaries between their slopes with lifts and runs.
