Canillo

Canillo is a quiet Andorran village serving as an access point to the Grandvalira ski area. It offers a gondola link into the wider slopes above, plus its own family-friendly nursery area and the Naturlandia leisure park nearby.

The ski area of Canillo is in the Andorran Pyrenees at an altitude of 1,530m.

Canillo is part of the Grandvalira ski area with access to 286 marked pistes, served by a total of 66 ski lifts. In addition to the skiing in Canillo itself (3 pisted ski runs), the appropriate ski Lift Pass will allow you to ski or snowboard in the other Grandvalira ski resorts of Encamp, Ordino-Arcalís, Pas de la Casa / Grau Roig and Soldeu / El Tarter.

With ski lifts as high as 2,465m, snow cover is generally reliable.

Snow and Weather

Canillo's lower valley position means natural snow cover can be variable compared to the higher Grandvalira sectors, but extensive snowmaking across the linked area helps keep the connecting pistes skiable through the season. Higher runs around El Tarter, Grau Roig and Pas de la Casa tend to hold snow better and for longer. Check J2Ski for up-to-date snow depth reports and current conditions before travelling.

Ski Area Stats

Skiing

Canillo's slopes form part of the extensive Grandvalira network, Andorra's largest ski area, linking with El Tarter, Soldeu, Pas de la Casa, Encamp and Grau Roig. The Canillo sector itself sits at a lower altitude, with a gondola carrying skiers up from the village to join the main runs around El Tarter and beyond. Higher up, the terrain opens into wide, sunny pistes suited to intermediates, with reds and blues dominating the sector, while more challenging runs and off-piste opportunities can be found further across the domain towards Pas de la Casa and Grau Roig. A dedicated beginner area near the base of Canillo gives new skiers a gentle, low-pressure introduction to the sport, with easy lifts and wide, flat learning slopes. Snowmaking across Grandvalira helps maintain reliable coverage throughout the season on the connecting runs. The Canillo lift also provides access to Naturlandia, a summer and winter leisure park with toboggan runs and zip lines, giving the sector a slightly different character from the purely piste-focused areas elsewhere in Grandvalira.

Canillo offers good sking, particularly, for Intermediate and Beginner skiers.

Snowboarding

Grandvalira's terrain suits freestyle riders well, with dedicated snowparks located around Grau Roig and Soldeu-El Tarter featuring rails, jumps and boxes of varying difficulty. From Canillo, boarders ride the gondola up to link into these areas and the wider network of red and blue runs, which offer plenty of cruising terrain for all-mountain riding between park sessions.

How to get there

 By Air

The nearest airport to Canillo is Toulouse, 130 minutes drive away.

Perpignan, Carcassonne and Barcelona airports are all within three hours drive.

Andorra has no airport of its own, so most visitors fly into Barcelona or Toulouse and continue by road, with transfer times of around two to three hours depending on traffic and border crossings. Barcelona offers more frequent flight connections, while Toulouse can mean a shorter drive. Regular coach transfer services run from both airports directly to Andorran resorts including Canillo. Self-drive is straightforward via the French or Spanish motorway networks, with the mountain roads into Andorra generally well maintained during winter.

Aprés Ski

Canillo itself is fairly low-key compared to Soldeu or Pas de la Casa, with a handful of local bars and restaurants around the village centre offering a relaxed, more Andorran atmosphere. For livelier nightlife, most visitors head along the valley to Soldeu, though Canillo's Palau de Gel area and village restaurants provide a quieter alternative after skiing.
