Font Romeu Overview
A lively and popular border resort attracting weekend crowds from Spain as well as France. Font Romeu is the highest town in France at around 1550m/5085ft enjoying over 3000 hours of sunshine yearly - more than the Rockies. The many hours of sunshine and almost Mediterranean climate used to make early and late season snow conditions unreliable so the resort invested heavily in snowmaking equipment. The resort now has more snowmaking facilities than any other resort in the Pyrenées with almost half of its slopes covered by man made snow.
A favourite family destination, Font Romeu has been lift-linked with neighbouring Pyrenées 2000 which was awarded Le Label Kid in 1995 for being the most family-friendly resort in France. Font Romeu's bed base is the second biggest in the Pyrenées, the resort village is four kilometres (two and a half miles) from the slopes. The Neiges Catalanes Pass allows you to ski at 7 of the neighbouring resorts further extending the choice of slopes. The resort has a huge variety of facilities many of them unique in France such as the Olympic Training Centre for pre-Olympic preparation. Young athletes attend here from around Europe with special facilities for both sport and academic studies.
Font Romeu is recognised by the Ministry for Health as being the leading world centre for the treatment of infantile asthma and much of their research is carried out here. Each year over a hundred children are treated in medical centres in the village while at the same time continuing their schooling. The exceptional high altitude climate, free of impurities and pollution makes this the perfect place to recover from respiratory ailments. The official language is French but Spanish and Catalan are also spoken.
Font Romeu is only 44km/28miles from Andorra, the duty-free tax haven and shoppers' paradise.
Notable Ski Runs
The most difficult run is the 'La Record'.
Skiing
Many of the runs are short and not over challenging, but for a greater choice the resort has signed up to the Les Neiges Catalanes Pass, which encompasses neighbouring ski resorts Err Puigmal, Eyne, Formigueres, Les Angles, lift-linked Pyrenées 2000, St Pierre del Forcats and Porte Puymorens. The most challenging skiing available at Font Romeu is Competition on the northern face.
In general, it's a perfect base for beginners and families. Les Airelles 1900m/6235 feet, the main departure point for downhill skiing has an information centre, a restaurant, lounge and bar as well as a large sun terrace.
90km/56miles of well kept, signposted cross-country tracks, which includes a special track for first-timers as well as trails of varying length and difficulty. Many of the cross-country trails lead through the pine wood forests.
Font Romeu offers good sking, particularly, for Intermediate and Beginner skiers.
Snowboarding
Boarders are well looked after at Font Romeu. The terrain park has plenty of features including tables, jumps and quarter pipe and there is music playing on the slope. There is also a boarder cross slalom course.
