Snow Forecast Summary - 25th November 2010
Published : 25-Nov-2010 10:36
:D :D :D :DThe past week has seen more snow added to the bases just about everywhere - ski resorts across The Alps, Pyrenees, Rockies and elsewhere have reported fresh snow. Much of the French Alps has had steady snow for several days, with accumulations exceeding half a metre. The story is similar across Switzerland and much of Austria. Northern Italy has seen very heavy snow with over a metre of fresh at a few resorts.
Dozens more resorts across Europe and the United States are now open, with a number of earlier-than-planned openings being reported for this coming weekend (including Argentiere in the Chamonix Valley and La Clusaz in the Aravis).
Scotland is currently getting more snow, although only Cairngorm is open at present.
European Weather and Snow Next Week
The longer range forecasts we hinted at last week have firmed up nicely and the immediate outlook for The Alps is very promising. Temperatures will continue to fall and the mountains are going to be very chilly indeed over the next few days, thanks to cold air being drawn down from the Arctic.
This cold air will mix with moist air as it pushes South, leading to some significant snowfall in many areas. The latest forecasts, which have been fairly consistent for the past few days, are showing three successive bands of snow likely to cross The Alps - with snow concentrated at the start and end of this weekend, and then again mid-week.
Depending on location, any or all three systems could bring heavy snow to low levels. The forecast models are indicating a brief rise in temperature coinciding with major precipitation mid-week. Depending on the exact sequence of changes that has the makings of quite a significant snow event, so stay tuned.
As next week is looking pretty interesting we'll send out an extra mail after the weekend to keep you informed, but as always keep an eye on our main Snow Forecasts Page for a quick summary of what's open, where it's snowed and what's forecast around the world.
Enjoy! 8)
