Super Steep Swiss Slope Closes as Cracks Appear

One of the world's steepest groomed slopes which opened last winter at Glacier 3000 near Gstaad in Switzerland has been forced to close after major cracks appeared in its snow surface.

The cracks appeared after a rapid and sustained rise in temperatures across the Alps with the freezing point moving high above 3,000m, something that has rarely happened before in January.

Californian Ski Area Fully Open For First Time Since 2021 Fire

California's Sierra-at-Tahoe ski area has opened all of its terrain for the first time since its infrastructure was badly damaged by the huge Caldor wild fire of late summer 2021.

The fire threatened several Californian ski areas and led to the evacuation of South Lake Tahoe below Heavenly, but was stopped short of destroying lifts and buildings there, however Sierra-at-Tahoe saw flames lass through the ski area. It was then closed until the very end of the 21-22 season and only partially opened in winter 22-23.

2024 Peak Year For Seeing Cosmic Events From The Slopes

2024 will be the peak year for seeing the aurora (northern lights) from the world's more northerly latitudes and will also see a rare total solar eclipse pass over ski areas in the US Midwest, Northeast and Quebec close to the end of the ski day in April.

California Ski Areas Back on Track

[b]After one of the worst starts to the season for snowfall in years, Californian ski areas have seen something of a bounce-back with a fairly snowy January.

Mammoth Mountain reports, "We just tallied 6 feet of snow in the month of January!"

The news come after the resort reported only two feet and two inches of natural snowfall between opening for its 23-24 season on 10th November and New Year.

Lego Created in Austrian Snow

Austrian resort Ischgl has gone Lego crazy this season with a series of Lego-themed events.

The 30th edition of their "Shapes in White" snow sculpture competition was this year themed on on Lego creations.

This year Lego judges joined the Ischgl jury in deciding their ten favourite designs to be created.

Olympic Gold & Silver for British Teen Ski Racing Sensation

A 16-year-old who, along with his two brothers, has been brought up a ski racer by his ex-ski racing Mum and Dad, has taken silver and gold medals, at the Youth Winter Olympics currently underway in Gangwon, South Korea.

Zak Carrick-Smith, the son of former racers Emma Carrick-Anderson and Phil Smith, won gold in the Alpine Skiing Combined competition on Monday, then took silver today in the GS competition.

Helicopter Crash Kills Heliskiers

At least three people are dead and four in a critical condition following a helicopter crash in mountains on the BC/Alaska border in Western Canada.

The helicopter, operated by Northern Escape Heli-Skiing, was reported to have been carrying six heliskiers along with the pilot and a guide.

World’s New Largest Indoor Ski Centre Heading To China (Again)

China has taken skiing on indoor snow to another level over the past decade.

The country's vast population predominantly live in the humid south of the country where natural snowfall is almost unheard of, so bringing the snow to the people has been a big hit with China now home to more than 50 indoor snow centres, more than a third of the world's total and most built since 2015. Industry studies from the country estimate that almost 20% of China's skiers do so indoors.

Alpe d'Huez First In World to Post 5m Base In 2024

Alpe d'Huez has leap frogged fellow French resorts Chamonix, Les Arcs and Flaine, which have all been posting the deepest snowpacks in the world at over 4 metres for some weeks, to report a 5 metre base at the 3330m summit of its ski runs. It's the first in the world to report a 5m base this season.

Vallee Blanche ‘Tourist Route’ New Exit Opening Next Weekend

A new gondola that forms part of €54m redevelopment of the historic Montenvers site above Chamonix is set to open at the end of next week, a few months later than had been hoped.

The gondola (pictured under construction in December) will provide direct access from the Mer de Glace glacier on which the world's longest lift-served ski run descends for the first time in more than three decades.

Improving Conditions on Scottish Slopes

A week of cold weather and snowfall forecast for the Scottish Highlands will hopefully mean more terrain opening at the country's five centres this week.

So far the winter has been more consistently cold and frequently subzero than it usually has been this century, but it has also been quite dry with limited snowfall, so there's not much of a base on slopes.

Extreme Cold Closes Canadian Ski Areas

After too little snowfall for the first month or so of the season in Western Canada was followed by stormy weather and some substantial accumulations over recent days and weeks, ski areas in Alberta and BC are being hit by extreme cold.

Banff and the wider Alberta/Eastern BC region is experiencing overnight lows down to -40° with a daytime high of -31° forecasted today.

Pyrenean Ski Areas Perk Up

Until now ski areas in The Pyrenees (and resorts in other mountain ranges in Spain and Portugal) have had a difficult first few months of the season with dry, warm, weather dominating.

Spain saw its warmest December on record with the result that snowmaking was limited or impossible and smaller resorts could not open at all in many cases and those that did have had very limited terrain open in most cases.

Norwegian Ski Train Gets New Paint Job

Powder Conditions in US As Snow Finally Arrives

[b]Heavy snowfall across North America have delivered "the first powder days of the season" to many resorts in the Pacific Northwest of the continent.

Accumulations of up to 24" (60cm) in 24 hours have been reported by ski areas in Oregon, Washington state and in BC, Canada to the north. Further south and further in land there have been significant snowfalls too and another major storm system is just moving in.

Hot on the heels of Robbie Williams playing two successive nights of concerts, the Black Eyed Peas have been lined up to play Ischgl's famous Top of the Mountain season closing gig, this year on April 30th.

The American hip hop superstars will follow in a long list of illustrious names to play the same concert that have included Kylie, Rihanna, Elton (twice), Katy Perry, Lenny Karvitz, Muse, The Beach Boys, Rod Stewart, Bob Dylan, Bon Jovi, Diana Ross, Peter Gabriel, Pink, Mariah Carey, Tina Turner, Deep Purple, Nickelback and Robbie Williams again (he played Ischgl in 2014).

Much Needed Snowfalls Bring Powder Conditions to North America

Unfortunately it has arrived too late for the key Christmas and New Year holiday weeks, but Canadian and US ski areas are finally seeing what is for most their first big snowfalls and resulting powder days of the season so far.

Ski areas in the Rockies posted the most snowfall, with 30-50cm (12-20 inch) totals for centres in Alberta, Colorado and Utah reported. Steamboat was one of the big winners, with Aspen and Snowbird getting over a foot of snowfall each.

Much Needed Snowfall in the Pyrenees

While snow levels are good across much of Europe and above average in the Alps, the Pyrenees have had a difficult start to the 23-24 season with mostly dry and often warm weather.

Snow levels are currently at a third of what they should be, on average, at the start of January and ski areas have been struggling to open terrain.

Cairngorm to open M1 lift from Friday

Cairngorm Mountain Resort has confirmed that they will be opening their M1 Poma lift from Friday for 'more experienced skiers and boarders'.

This will give access to the White Lady and the M1 pistes, to add to the beginner's area at the base of the mountain, currently available on 200m of SnowFactory-created snow.

Fresh New Year Snowfall in the Alps

There's been fresh snowfall in the Alps as a period of more changeable weather follows what has been nearly a fortnight of largely dry and sunny weather.

Montgenevre in France was among the first to report 20cm of fresh snowfall on New Years Day and subsequently many other areas have reported similar accumulations above 1800m.
