Norwegian Resorts Begin Six Month Ski Season

Norwegian ski areas have begun opening for winter 2012-13 after heavy snow in many parts of the country at the weekend.

One of the largest resorts, Hemsedal, will open this Thursday 1 November, a day earlier than planned.

Eddie the Eagle jumping at the London Ski Show

Olympic legend flying in to launch MuchBetterChalets.com, public invited to jump with him.

Eddie the Eagle, ski jumping star of the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, will be coming out of retirement to jump at this year's London Ski Show to celebrate the launch of MuchBetterChalets.com. He will then be hosting a 'Jump like Eddie' competition where members of the public will be able to don ski suits and take an airbag jump in the hope of winning his vote.

Austria’s New Highest Lift Opens

The new Wildspitzbahn gondola has begun operation at Pitztal in Austria.

Oitztal is one of seven Austrian glacier ski areas already operating for 2012-13 and the new lift is already being used by skiers and boarders.

The new 8-seater gondola accesses 3,440m high Hinterer Brunnenkogel, Austria and Tyrol's highest glacier.

“Winter Locked Down” For 2012-13 In Canada

Mt Norquay at the weekend

Canadian resorts have been opening early, in some cases the earliest ever, thanks to fresh snow and cold temperatures for snowmaking.

Mount Norquay in Banff was the first to open last week, it's earliest ever opening, thanks to low temperatures and a combination of 30 cm of natural and manmade snow providing the best opening skiing conditions ever.

New On The Slopes of Flaine

Flaine (flaine.com), at the heart of the Grand Massif ski area with its 265km of piste, has announced new lifts and other on-slope improvements for the coming winter.

After the success of the new 6-seater chairlift, «Désert Blanc», last year, the Aup de Véran gondolas being replaced for 2012-13.

British Alpine Speed Team Raffle

British ski team mates Dougie Crawford and TJ Baldwin have launched an innovative way of raising money to help fund their race season, as they begin qualification season for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

The pair, who are two of Britain's top ranking Alpine skiers, are running a raffle to help pay the costs of skiing for the British Ski Team after funding was cut. This year British Ski and Snowboard have opted to fund only slalom. TJ and Dougie have to pay for their own coach as well as their own travel, lift passes and accommodation. With the Olympic qualification period beginning and the World Championships in the New Year, 2012/2013 is shaping up to be big season for the boys and will pave the way for their end goal of Sochi, 2014.

Pricing Survey Finds Costs Down Across Europe

Preliminary findings from a now annual survey sponsored by Post Office® Travel Money has found that costs for skiers in resorts across Europe should be lower this winter thanks to the increasing value of Sterling compared to winter 2012-13.

In terms of the lowest-prices, the Post Office's annual Ski Resort Report – produced in conjunction with Crystal Ski – is Bansko in Bulgaria, where skiers will find their pounds stretch even further this winter as Sterling buys 7.5 per cent more Bulgarian lev than last season.

Hello, and welcome to a distinctly snowy Weekly Snow Report!

As we write, temperatures are dipping across Europe and daytime averages are about to drop by 10-15C over the next 48 hours.

Cold air is pushing into the region from the North and East, whilst mild, wet weather tracks from the West. The combination has the potential for some significant snowfall in the Northern and Eastern Alps, with snow likely across the wider area.

Heavy Snow in California Leads To Early Openings

Squaw Valley Yesterday

Resorts in California have been reporting heavy snow over the past 36 hours and expect that up to a metres (40 inches) of new snow may have fallen by the time the current storm is expected to end tomorrow.

After last winter's historically low snowfall in the region (which followed record snowfall in 2010-11) the resorts are hoping that this is a sign that long term weather predictions for 2012-13 of at least above average snowfall will prove correct.

Cow Power For Killington Lift

Killington in Vermont has joined Aspen, Colorado in announcing it will have methane powered lifts this winter.

But the methane – which is used to power a turbine to generate electricity comes from a different source. While Aspen is using gas trapped in old mine workings to cover all the resort's power needs, Killington is buying in enough methane generated green energy to cover the operating requirements of one of its gondolas from a green energy company that makes methane from cow manure.

Arapahoe Basin announces opening day for 2012-13 ski and ride season

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area (A-Basin) announced that Wednesday, October 17, 2012, will mark the official start to the Colorado ski and snowboard season. The Black Mountain Express lift will start at 9:00 a.m. MST to shuttle guests to the beginning of the intermediate High Noon trail at mid-mountain.

The Alps (well, some of them at least) are about to go all white! Widespread light snow to around 2,000m is expected tomorrow (Friday) with a further band of snow pushing in late on Sunday and into Monday. Heaviest snow, as low as 1,500m in many areas, is expected in the North and East of The Alps and local accumulations may be significant. Of the open ski resorts, Zermatt in particular appears to be in the firing line...

Back To the Future – New Rail Service to Swiss Alps

Tickets go on sale this Thursday 11 October for a new Eurostar (www.eurostar.com) weekly ski service to the Swiss Alps this winter.

The new rail service , created through a partnership with the international high-speed train service, "TGV Lyria, is a flashback to the days before air travel became feasible for the masses 40 years ago, but will be a lot faster than the original ski trains 50 – 80 years ago.

Alta Badia Launches ‘Slope Food’

The 3 Valleys Spend on Snowmaking

The 3 Valleys, the world's largest ski area, which already has more than 2,00 snow cannons pointing at a third of its 600km of slopes, has been spending more on snowmaking over the spring and summer ready for this winter.

Last autumn, alas, it was too warm in November for Val Thorens' mighty snow making arsenal to work and it had to postpone opening for a few days, but hopefully this autumn it will be colder sooner.

Scorpions for Ischgl

Ischgl (ischgl.com)have announced their Festival Opening Week details from 23 November 2012.

The famous Austrian party town makes a big deal of its opening – in late November, and closing, in early May, by bringing in pop and rock stars to play free concerts for ticket holders. Stars to perform have included Rihanna, Kylie, Katy Perry and Elton (twice).

There's little to report in the forecasts for this week, with much of The Alps currently enjoying clear and relatively settled weather.

Our favorite forecast models are indicating the possibility of a distinct cooling next week, possibly with some precipitation... but we'll have more on that for you next week.

Alpine Meadows To Open Mile-Long Terrain Park

A recent partnership between Alpine Meadows in California and Snow Park Technologies means skiers and riders can look forward to continued terrain park improvements and what the Tahoe resort describes as, "an enhanced park experience" throughout the winter season. Austria's Skiwelt (skiwelt.at) has announced a €9.3m s[pend on upgrades for the coming winter.

The country's largest fully lift-linked area with 280km of piste is spending on upgrading lifts, new terrain parks, a floodlit toboggan run and better grooming and snow making.

A New T Bar Installed

You rarely hear of new T Bar drag lifts being installed anywhere. Indeed at one point the lifts were so unpopular that a plan (later abandoned apparently) to remove them all from Austria was unveiled in the 1990s.

But Bretton Woods in New Hampshire, USA is installing a brand new Doppelmayr T-Bar as part of its expansion in to the Mount Stickney area for the 2012/13 season. There's also a new warming cabin with a wood stove, allowing skiers to get the chill out before their next run.

Tignes Re-Opens

Tignes became the first French resort to open for 2012-13 when it re-opened on Saturday (29 Sept 12). Temperatures are currently hovering just below freezing and there's a 20cm snow covering on the Grand Motte glacier which has 20km of piste open.

British tour operator Snoworks will launch their annual All-Terrain courses on the glacier in less than three weeks' time, from October 20th, and run every week until the winter kicks off in December, enabling recreational skiers to enjoy the quiet pre-main-season slopes whilst brushing up on their skills before the winter ski season proper kicks off.
