Burton European Open Returning To Laax
Published : 31-Jan-2012 09:31
Snowy Laax
It was possibly an unlucky decision that the 13th Burton European Open should be postponed – it was taken in early December when there had been almost no snowfall in the Alps and the organizers feared then there would not be enough to build the pipe and other elements required for the contest. The Open is normally staged in January each year.

That's changed to some extent since Saturday with falls of up to 105cm reported at resorts in France, Andorra and Spain with temperatures dropping as low as -12C

A number of large French regions are reporting snowfall there has hit 'record levels.'
In Chamonix's case the record was for snowfall last weekend, with at one point a metre falling in 24 hours, which the tourist office said was 'a record' but it's not clear if that's ever or just in January. Not that anybody cares much, conditions are phenomenal once the roads are clear and the maximum avalanche danger drops.

It's all change on Europe's ski slopes which have gone from being virtually snow-free a month ago to buried up to four metres (13 feet) deep in snow this week.
Assuming the snowfall eventually stops, it's clearly good news that many resorts, particularly those with high altitude slopes, have snow cover that looks set to last well in to Spring, even if there's no more snow for the next three months.

Heads Up - Incoming Snow - Alps - 4th January onward

As per the title - big snows expected across much of The Alps over the next couple of days.
Parts of the Northern Alps have had / are having snow right now but the main event of this week looks likely to start tomorrow afternoon.
Exact quantities are difficult to predict but the potential is certainly there for some very heavy snowfalls over Thursday night and into Friday, down to quite low levels (below 1,000m). Widespread accumulations of 50cm and more are looking likely.
