Winter Start in Kaprun

Kaprun will officially celebrate the start of the 2012-13 ski season with The White Start Games on 10th – 11th November 2012 on the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier.

The event will include 2013 ski testing from Atomic, Blizzard, Fischer, Head, Salomon, Rossignol and Völkl; plus the latest helmets from Alpina. There'll also be Live music at the alpincenter and a competition to win a new Audi A 1 Sportback car that's open to all.

Ski Scotland Offer All Mountain Pass

Anyone able to get to Scotland's five ski areas between this autumn and next summer might consider acquiring one of the limited edition All-Area Season Passes just released (www.ski-scotland.com).

The passes are valid at all five areas - Cairngorm above Aviemore, Nevis range at Fort William, Glencoe on the West Coast and The Lecht and Glenshee on the Eastern side of the country from December 2012 through to October 2013.

Three New Blue Runs In The Dolomites

Dolomiti Superski (www.dolomitisuperski.com), the giant ski area with 1200km of piste groomed by 320 snowcats, has announced there will be new terrain to ski in some of its many valleys this winter. Whether this will increase that total piste length figure is yet to be revealed.

Austrian Ski Areas Open

As of this weekend five ski areas are open in Austria - that's more than half of the northern hemisphere's total! Most are in the Tyrol where half of the world's currently open ski areas are located.

The Solden and Stubai glaciers have opened for 'winter' 2012-13 on the first weekend of the Autumn joining the already open Hintertux, Molltal and Pitztal glaciers. Snow depths range for 20 to 60cm with the most terrain open at Hintertux with 22km.

Tour operator Crystal Ski (www.crystalski.co.uk) have just launched a special offer for skiers who can be tempted to make a booking in the next fortnight (up to 3rd October).

Chairlifts, Videos and Avalanche Safety New At Les Menuires

Les Menuires in the 3 Valleys has announced it hasinstalled a new six-seater chairlift for the coming winter.

The €4.2m, six-seater, easy-access Reberty chairlift is seen by the resort as completing the connections in the Les Menuires and Saint Martin ski lift network. Replacing the old Reberty bucket lift (built in 1983 with a capacity of 600 people/hour), it has more than four times the capacity of the old lift, and offers skiers a new high-speed way to get back from the Masse as well as a direct access to the Becca ski area, BK Park and the fun Acticross zone.

World Military Winter Games 2013

The World Military Winter Games will be staged in Annecy, France, from March 25 to 29th next year.

There's a long history off association between snow sports and the military; with military training being a major factor of the growth of the sport in the early years of the twentieth century, and ex-military personnel were leading players in the building boom of new ski resorts like Vail in the USA and Meribel in France.

Stubai Glacier Opening New Lifts, Black Piste and Chapel

Austria's Stubai Glacier is aiming to open for its autumn glacier ski season any day now and is looking forwards to unveiling some new lifts for 2012-13.

The Stubai Glacier has invested about 12 million Euros in two new chairlifts, an eight-seater chairlift, Rotadl and the quad chairlift, Daunjoch.

Ryanair is attempting to take a greater share of the independent ski market this winter by falsely claiming to offer the lowest fares to gateway airports in the Alps.

Davos Offer Free Skiing and Saves Snow

Davos is offering free lift passes to anyone arriving in the first five weeks of the season to ski between 16th November and 23rd December 2012.

The deal is that if you book a stay at one of the participating hotels direct through www.davos.ch or www.klosters.ch you receives one free ski pass per night for the Jakobshorn and Parsenn ski regions.

2 Horse Powered Ski Lift for Megeve

Megève experts Stanford Skiing (www.stanfordskiing.co.uk) – who differ from most operators to the classy French ski area in that they actually have more the a dozen staff on the ground in resort – has reported that the resort will introduce what's believed to be the first horse drawn ski lift in a French resort for more than 80 years.

New Morzine – Avoriaz Cable Car Opening 2013

An opening date has been given for the long heralded new cable car that will link Mrziner and Avoriaz in the French Portes du Soleil – and unusually it's right in the middle of the ski season.

The new lift, which uses three cables or '3S technology' to combine the benefits of a cable car and a gondola will be operational from 15th February 2013.

Designer Porsche Chairs on New Swiss Lift

Super-cool Swiss resort Laax has commissioned the famed German car designer Porsche to create the chairs on a new six seater lift the resort will open this winter.

The new six-seater chairlift will run from Treis Palas to Crap Masegn and is one of two new six-seater chairlifts currently under construction at the famous ski resort, which is due to open its glacier ski area for the season on20th October, 2012. The other new six seater will run from Plaun Lavadinas - Fuorcla da Sagogn.

Heavy Snow In The Alps

Autumn, let alone winter, may still be several weeks away, but there have been large snowfalls on mountain tops in the Alps in recent days.

This has raised excitement levels in resorts like Verbier, but has actually brought powder skiing and snowboarding conditions in the first week of September to the half-dozen resorts that are currently open for glacier skiing in the Alps.

Valloire Adding Two New Six-Seater Chairlifts

Valloire in the Maurienne Valley has announced it's installing two new high-speed detachable six seater chairlifts, both are scheduled to open on December 15th 2012 and serve the Setaz ski sector.

The longer of the two new lifts is the 1.6km long Cornafond chair which will replacce two 'difficult-to-ride' drag lifts and an old double chair, cutting the uplift time in half and increasing capacity on the route to 3000.
