New survey shows 91% of Skiers and Snowboarders now wear helmets

Helmet use among US skiers and snowboarders has reached an all-time high, according to the 2024/25 data from the National Ski Areas Association.

The NSAA report that 91% of participants now wear helmets on the slopes, up from just 25% in the 2002/03 season, highlighting a dramatic shift in snowsports safety culture over the past two decades.

The data shows helmet use is now widespread across all age groups and regions.

Skiers and riders aged 17 and under recorded the highest adoption rate at 96%, with the 10–14 age group reaching 98%. Even among visitors aged 65 and older, helmet use remained strong at 92%, underscoring how helmets have become standard equipment for most participants.

The NSAA also pointed to research linking increased helmet use with a decline in serious head injuries. According to a peer-reviewed study quoted in the report, serious head injuries fell from 4.2% of all ski injuries in 1995 to 3.0% by 2012.

Researchers concluded that as helmet adoption increased, potentially serious head injuries - particularly concussions – have declined significantly. The study also found that helmets are effective at preventing skull fractures and have nearly eliminated scalp lacerations in skiing and snowboarding incidents.

"The high rate of helmet use across all age groups is a testament to the power of education and shared responsibility in our industry," said Michael Reitzell, NSAA President.

He added that while helmet use has become second nature for most skiers and riders, safety education and responsible behavior on the mountain remain equally important components of injury prevention.

The NSAA credits industry-wide safety initiatives, including its 'Lids on Kids' campaign and partnerships promoting helmets.
