Australian Centres Re-Open After Snow Arrives

Australian ski areas that had been forced to close shortly after opening for their 2026 seasons a month ago by mild, dry conditions have reopened after a multi-day snowstorm finally arrived.

"What a difference a day can make on the mountain! Hotham woke to a storm total of 22cm of natural snowfall, and counting, with cold temperatures helping get the snow guns firing to match Mother Nature's wintry offering. This provided the ideal backdrop to get skiing and boarding returning to Hotham today," a resort spokesperson at one of the closed centres said.

K2 Skier Conquers Another 8,000m+ Himalayan Peak With 4,000m+ Vert Ski Descent

Polish ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel, known for the first ski descent of K2, has completed the first continuous, oxygen‑free ski descent of Nanga Parbat (8,126 m) in the Himalayas. The achievement closes his decade‑long Pakistan Project and marks the first time anyone has skied an unbroken line from the summit to the end of snow conditions on the mountain.

Early season reports from Australia, New Zealand, Argentina and Chile are disappointing due to mild temperatures and limited snowfall to date. The northern hemisphere has around 10 summer ski areas open, with most expected to close during July.

Double Gondola Delight For Montgenèvre

Montgenèvre, which sits on the Italian border and is part of the huge Milky Way circuit, has confirmed a major lift upgrade for winter 2026–2027. It has announced that the long‑serving Chalvet double chairlift, which dates back to 1985, will be replaced by two modern installations designed to deliver faster, more comfortable access from the village to the top of the Chalvet sector.
