Review of Arc 1950, France

"Amazing terrain to ski on"

reviewed by Robert *

Les Arcs has probably more black runs than any other single resort in the Alps. It has plenty of gentle blues in between and a good spread of reds between all those. Cross the Vanoise Express to les Coches and the area doubles, taking in La Plagne and many satellite villages. This Paradiski Area has a superb snow record, always managing to hold the full area links open until late in April, one of the most snow sure areas in France. Then you have the altitude going up to 3200m and down to 1250m so some exceptionally long runs to work the legs for a challenge. The lift system seems to be updated annually, so high capacity and fast lifts, making queues disappear fast, and more ski time . The restaurants in France tend to be expensive, for what you get, and lots of local cheese-Savoyard after all! There are a few gems tucked away, often in the smaller villages. Mainly self catering, the odd hotel, and many “Chalet” options by lots of different companies. Easy to get to by air using Geneva or Chambery, train to Bourg St Maurice, or a 9 hour drive from Calais. My only negative is to be cautious staying in 2000/1950 as bad weather and high wind can close the valley, 1600/1800 will always have some skiing open in any weather. Having said that, I am staying in 1950 for 2 weeks this winter as the location to get around in excellent!
