The university of snowsports? That dream is becoming a reality thanks to the International Federation of Snowsport Instructors (IVSI) and the Deutsche Hochschule für Gesundheit & Sport (DHGS), who have launched a new part-time university certificate programme called 'SNOWSPORTS'.
The course carries 60 ECTS credits at master's level, which can be transferred towards a Masters degree in Sports Science.
According to the organisers, the programme has been developed to address changing demands within the snowsports sector, including climate change, digitalisation, internationalisation and evolving industry standards.
The curriculum combines alpine sports training with sports science, leadership and management, and practical projects in mountain and tourism environments. It is delivered through a blended learning format, with in-person teaching, online study and practical sessions, allowing participants to continue working while studying.
The nine modules cover subjects including alpine skiing, snowboarding, snow and avalanche science, sports medicine, exercise physiology, leadership, pedagogy, tourism management and research methods.
The course is aimed at ski and snowboard instructors looking to progress into management roles, former athletes planning careers beyond competition, professionals working in ski schools, lift companies and tourism organisations, and those with a sports background seeking to move into the winter sports industry.
Sissel Astrup of IVSI said:
"This is a strategic qualification for those who want to re-imagine snow sports—on the slopes, in management, in destinations, organizations, and the industry."
