Club Med Returning To US Ski Market

Club Med, the pioneer of the all-inclusive ski holiday, has announced they're returning to the US ski market after two decades with the unveiling of a new property planned for Snowbasin Resort in Utah, slated to open December 2024.
Club Med most recently operated a facility in the USA at Copper Mountain in Colorado but promise this new opening will be on another level and mark the brand's first-ever Exclusive Collection (5-Star) resort in the U.S. as well as being their first new resort in the U.S. this century.

December Snowfall Records Set in Western US With 200"/5m

A number of December snowfall records have been broken in California.
The Palisades ski area by Lake Tahoe has reported its all-time snowiest December, with 199 inches (503cm) of snowfall so far.
What's particularly remarkable is that all the snow has fallen in the latter half of the month, the region was suffering a warm, dry November and early December which had forced many resorts in the region to stay closed beyond planned opening dates. Some have only finally opened over the past few days.

Ski Areas Open in At Least 55 Countries

Around 4,000 ski areas in 55 countries are believed to be open as we head in to 2022, the most since February 2020.
Almost every nation with ski lifts in the northern hemisphere appears to be allowing ski areas to operate, although the surge in the omicron variant has led to some restricting operations to vaccinated-only skiers and closing borders to countries with high infection levels.

Second Huge Snow Storm Moves Into Western US

It's looking like it's going to be a very White Christmas along North America's West Coast with a series of storms moving in a week after the region's long dry spell through November and early December ended with a huge snow storm.
The new storm system may initially see some rain fall on Wednesday and early Thursday before temperatures drop and heavy snowfall begins.

China To Close Ski Resorts Hosting Olympic Races For Three Months

China is to close the ski areas set to host Olympic competition next February from January 4th.[/b]
Normally ski areas staging Olympic events stay open to tourism up to and during Olympic competitions.
However reports from China say the centres concerned will remain closed to the public through to the end of March, effectively the rest of the season, in order to cover the Paralympics from 4th to 13th March too.

Western US Ski Areas Can Finally Open After Huge Snowstorm

Ski resorts along the West Coast of the US are scrambling to open after a huge snowstorm left 40-80 inches (1-2 metres) of snow lying on their previously bare slopes.
A warm, dry fall had left some running almost a month late on planned opening dates after an unprecedented late-October snowfall was followed by nearly eight weeks of unfavourable weather for snowfall or snowmaking.

Potentially Huge Snowfall Starts in Western US

A huge snowstorm that may bring as much as 7 feet (2 metres) of snowfall to Western North America by the end of this week has just got started.
Ski areas in California and expected to see some of the biggest accumulations which, at the most optimistic end, could see as much as five feet (1.5 metres) of snowfall at resort level and an extra 50cm (20") more up on the highest slopes, by the end of this week.

Scottish Ski Centres Re-Open For First Time in 11 Months

[b]Four of Scotland's five Highland ski areas are re-opening today (Saturday 11th December) for the first time since they were closed by the second lockdown at the start of January.
In fact Glenshee was first to open, yesterday, with Cairngorm, The Lecht and Glencoe all announcing yesterday that they'll be opening limited terrain too, this weekend.

Snow Across USA and Canada At Last

Ski resorts across North America have been celebrating fresh snowfall in the past 24 hours.[/b]
The snow – the first significant falls for the best part of a month for many – is particularly welcome at resorts in areas along the Pacific Coast that have had to delay opening due to warm weather and no snow.

Vail Resorts Now Operates 40 Ski Areas Worldwide

The world's largest ski resorts operator, Vail Resorts, has taken its global total of ski areas to 40, with the acquisition of three more ski areas.[/b]
The company has bought three resorts in Pennsylvania from Seven Springs Mountain Resort Inc for approximately $125 million (US).

Austrian Ski Areas to Re-Open For Winter Tourism

Austria's ski resorts can re-open hotels and restaurants to guests from this weekend, the government has announced. The country is currently the only major ski nation that has closed its ski areas to tourism.
However decisions will be made on the precise details on a state-by-state basis by regional governments, particularly for hotels and restaurants.

New Book Provides An A to Z of Skiing Advice

A new picture book of skiing has been published, seemingly aimed at those fairly new to skiing, although it could make a nice gift for those who already know the sport.
Lavishly illustrated with hand-drawn pictures by author and illustrator Kimberley Kay, an avid skier and former ski racer (pictured below), Ski A to Z is a fun introduction to skiing.

Kicking Horse Starting Season with Record Base

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort says they'll have their deepest base ever for an opening day when the lifts start turning again there this Friday.
The ski area, located on the BC/Alberta border, currently has 160cm (64") of snow lying after clocking up 323cm (nearly 11 feet) of pre-season powder.

London Ski Show Back in 2022

The London ski show says it will be back next Autumn and to prove it recently staged a preview event a year in advance at Battersea Evolution in Battersea Park.
The show was last staged in 2019 by the Telegraph Group which axed both its show and its magazine at the start of the pandemic last year. So this revived show, although at the same venue and for the usual four days in late October that the show has run in recent years has different organisers, the Smart Group.

Last-Season’s Locked Down Resorts Start 21-22 Big With Huge Areas Open

Ski areas in some of the countries where ski areas couldn't open at all last season, or only open limited terrain in a limited way, have opened for winter 21-22 with huge amounts of terrain open for early December.
Ski resorts in Andorra, Austria, Italy and Spain currently have the biggest ski areas open in the world, with several opening up more than 100km of slopes each – the biggest areas open anywhere since last April. Most of the areas concerned have not been open for skiing since the start of March 2020. Les Menuires is pictured top on Saturday.

Leading Scandinavian Ski Areas Open For the Season

Most of Scandinavia's leading ski areas are open from this weekend. Finland's biggest ski areas have already open, some for two months now, but the SkiStar group which operates the region's biggest ski areas including Sälen and Åre in Sweden as well as Trysil and Hemsedal in Norway, opens them all from this weekend. Other leading resorts are opening too.

Switzerland has removed a requirement introduced less than a week ago requiring Brits to quarantine for 10 days on arrival.
The move was a response to the new Covid variant Omicron but was not matched in the same way by other countries.

World Cup Races Reveal Vast Snow Cover Gap Between North and South Rockies

The return of the World Cup Racing circuit to North America last weekend after a two year break due to the pandemic has highlighted the huge differences between snow conditions in different parts of the continent at present.
Most ski regions are struggling with warmer than average temperatures and limited snowfall. The exception is a small area in Eastern BC and Western Alberta around the northern Rockies which are seeing the most snowfall in the world at present.

French Ski Season Readies for Full Launch

Although restrictions have been tightened to now include mask-wearing on all lifts and to have your digital COVID passport (Vaccinated, recovered or negative test) ready to flash as required, ski resorts are (touch wood) continuing to open in France, which of course wasn't happening this time last year.
