Andorra Opens for The Season

It's a very good start to the winter in the Pyrenees with the region's largest ski area, Andorra's Grandvalira, opening for the season a few days earlier than expected on Tuesday and one of Spain's leading ski areas posting the most terrain open anywhere in Europe at present. [/b]

North America Leads World On Most Terrain Open So Far

Lake Louise in Canada is believed to have the most terrain open of any ski area in the world as we near the start of December/winter.

It has posted 90km of terrain open, the most anywhere since last May. The Alberta resort near Banff has had more than 45cm (20 inches) of snowfall since Friday although unfortunately that impacted three World Cup races staged there over the weekend, the first in North America for two years due to the pandemic, with two races cancelled. The Men's downhill that happened on Saturday was on a shortened course.

The Return of Quarantine For UK Arrivals in the Swiss Alps

As has been widely reported, in response to the new coronavirus variant, The UK government has announced that all arrivals must self-isolate on arrival back in the UK, take a PCR test on day 2 and continue to self-isolate until they obtain a negative result.

First FIS World Cup Downhill of 21-22 Cancelled Due to Snowfall

The highly-anticipated Lake Louise Audi FIS Ski World Cup had to be cancelled due to overnight snowfall yesterday.

The race was also due to mark the return of the World Cup tour to North America after a two year break due to the pandemic.

Snowy Opening Day in New England

After a very tough Fall for snowmakers, most of the leading ski areas in New England and the US Northeast have managed to open at least some terrain for the current Thanksgiving weekend.

New Legal Requirement To Have Personal Liability Insurance When Skiing in Italy

A new law due to come into force on 1st January2022 requires all skiers and boarders to have insurance when they go on the country's slopes.

The law is particularly focussed on the need for a policy that covers your liability if you cause an injury to someone else, or someone else's property, on the slopes.

Morzine Upgrades Key Chairlift

[b]Morzine's Bélvèdere chairlift has been upgraded from a fixed-grip quad to a detachable six-seater for the upcoming 21-22 season.

The new chairlift will also have a much greater uplift capacity of up to 2,800 people per hour when it re-opens next month.

Crans-Montana Snowpark becomes the ‘Alaia Park’

[b]The dynamic Alaïa group is taking over the management of Crans-Montana's Snowpark.

The company has already set up a surfing facility - Alaïa Bay - in Sion and offers skateboarding and parcours features at their Alaïa Chalet base in Crans Montana. From this winter they will be also be managing the ski area's snowpark.

Actually... Some Austrian Ski Area Stay Open ...But No Tourists

[b]In the fast-moving world of Austria's 20 day lockdown, which officially began on Monday, ski areas that thought they'd be closed, don't actually have to. But hotels, restaurants, tourism and hospitality do.

In short, we have not returned to the "ski lifts must close full lockdown" of Autumn 2020 but to the January - late April Austrian lockdown model where ski lifts could open if they wanted to for local people to have the slopes to themselves, but tourism is not permitted an hotels are closed.

French & German Ski Seasons Gets Underway

After the bad news of the "up to 20 days" lockdown in Austria from Monday, two of the countries that had been among the other major ski nations not top open for the season last winter, have got their 21-22 seasons underway.

Tignes had already opened in France last month but the 'winter season proper' has begun this weekend with Val Thorens opening for their season as planned, along with Montgenevre (pictured above earlier this week) and, first in the Pyrenees, Porte Puymorens, due to good early snow conditions.

UK’s Two Largest Ski Holiday Companies Create COVID Travel Info Hubs

The UK's two biggest ski holiday companies, Crystal and Inghams, have each now got detailed information online about what skiers need to do when travelling from the UK to each of their destination countries.

The hubs are both very detailed, but offer concise guidance and endeavour to answer the "So do I or don't I?" type questions which are sometimes left in the air in government information sites.

Over 5km Of New Ski Runs in Val Gardena

Val Gardena has announced that two new ski runs will open there this winter, a black run that is just over a kilometre long, and a red run of more than 4km.

The new 'La Ria' black drops 310 vertical metres along the line of the former Dantercepies gondola, it's 1,110 metres long and has an average gradient of 52%

Nearly Summer Snow in Australia

Ski areas in Australia have had up to 20cm (8") of snowfall in a 48 hour snowstorm just two weeks before the start of summertime in the southern hemisphere.

The ski season ended in the country around six weeks ago in early October as resorts gave up the battle to stay open against a background of diminishing snow cover and local lockdowns.

Karting In The Dark in the French Alps

New for this winter in the huge Portes du Soleil region. The village of Saint-Jean D'aulps is offering adrenaline junkies the chance to whizz down a 4km (2.5 mile) long snowy slope, in a mountain kart, at night.

The run, which takes in 800 metres of vertical descent in the low-slung three-wheel kart, allows dare devils to descend the Roc d'Enfer ski area at high velocity in the gravity powered vehicle.

America’s Largest Ski Area Delays Opening For The 21-22 Season

The largest ski area in the USA, Park City in Utah, won't be opening this Friday 19th November as it had planned.

Despite a series of snowfalls in the Rockies and across western North America over the past month, warm spells have melted much of the fresh fallen snow away and made it difficult to run snowmaking machines long enough to build bases.

Andermatt Opens 1500 Metres of Vertical This Weekend

As more ski areas open for the season, there's competition to see which resort can offer the most.

Last weekend Switzerland's Saas Fee became the first to claim it had more than 50km of slopes open and this weekend fellow Swiss resort says it will already be offering 1500 metres of lift-served vertical descent.

A Dozen More Ski Areas Opening this Weekend

At least a dozen more ski areas will open for their 21-22 seasons this weekend in six countries, taking the numbers open already for the 21-22 season past the 50 mark.

Third French Resort Announces Plan to open Next Week

Montgenevre has become the third French resort to announce it intends to open for the season a week on Saturday.

Chamonix and Val Thorens had announced they intended to open on that date several months ago, but Montgenevre has moved its opening date forward several weeks after heavy snowfall at the start of the month which brough several feet (60cm+) of new snow to its higher slopes. Travelling To Ski With Teens this Winter

British families planning to head to the Alps this summer are being advised by tour operators and travel agents to be aware of issues regarding coronavirus vaccinations for teenagers.

The nub of the matter is that whilst most European countries have been double jabbing teenagers with vaccine, the same as adults, the UK has so far only been giving one dose to teens, so once on holiday in Europe they are not treated as fully-vaccinated like their parents.

New Lifts for Lech and the Arlberg Region This Winter

Lech ski resort has announced two state-of-the-art new Doppelmayr lifts will go into service there this winter as part of the Arlberg network which connects the skiing of St Anton, Lech, Zurs and a number of other villages in the region.

There's a major upgrade to the old Madlochbahn lift, now a high-speed 6-seater detachable chairlift with pull-down weather-protection bubble covers and heated seats. The also has a new valley station which is located on the other side of the Lake Zürsersee from the current base. With a capacity of more than 2,100 skiers per hour, it replaces a much slower, lower capacity fixed-grip double chairlift installed in the 1960s.

Season Starts Friday in Canada and Eastern USA

The ski season is due to get underway in Alberta and Vermont on Friday with three ski areas set to open for their 21-22 runs.

There's not much snow about yet though and Killington in Vermont (pictured above on Wednesday) will be using entirely machine-made snow to open, taking advantage of recent low temperatures.

Some Canadian Resorts To Require Skiers Be fully Vaccinated To Use Lifts

Canada's 21-22 ski season is due to kick off this coming weekend at at least three resorts, but it has been announced that several of them will require people to have to show proof of vaccination in order to be able to access the slopes.

The Resorts of the Canadian Rockies (RCR) group which runs Nakiska ski area, the closest to Calgary, which is expected to open this Saturday, as well as Fernie, Kimberley and Kicking Horse Mountain in BC, announced yesterday that proof of vaccination will be required for all guests before they can get on the mountain.

November Snowfall for The Alps

Fresh snow has begun falling again in the Alps following a shift in the weather coinciding with the start of November.

Up to 20cm (8 inches) of snowfall has been reported so far, mostly in the Western Alps, but the snowfall is expected to continue all week and to extend across the alps with snowfall to quite low elevations as temperatures drop. Some centres may see as much as 60cm (two feet) of snowfall in total by the weekend.
