Tignes Latest to End Summer Ski Season Early

Tignes has ended its 2019 summer ski season a week early due to extremely hot temperatures in the Alps thawing snowcover on its glacier.

It's the latest area to close earlier than planned with two Norwegian glacier areas that had planned to stay open in to September also closing recently instead.

Long Planned Link Between Kaprun and its Glacier Enters Final Stages

The long-planned link between the ski resort of Kaprun in Austria and its glacier ski area, the Kitzsteinhorn, is in to the final stage of its two year construction plan, due to finish this autumn.

Kaprun has had two separate ski areas for more than 50 years, the Maiskogel family ski area directly above the village, and the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, the lifts up to which are located up the valley from the resort itself.

Lego To Release New Ski Resort Set

Lego has announced a new ski resort construction set (Number 60203) is to go on sale in the autumn.

The 800+ piece set in the Lego City range is designed for children aged six and over to build and contains a ski shop, ski patrol office, 4x4 vehicle with snow plough attachment, a small helicopter and ski patrol snowmobile towing an injured skier in a blood wagon along with many small extras.

Vail Resorts Purchase Another 17 Ski Areas

Vail Resorts have become probably the largest ever ski-resort operator after purchasing 17 more ski areas in a spend of a little over a quarter of a billion dollars to buy the Peak Resorts Group.

It means Vail Resorts now operate 37 ski areas in the US, Canada and Australia including North America's two biggest – Whistler and Park City - and more than a dozen more famous name ski areas such as Heavenly, Breckenridge, Perisher, Stowe and Crested Butte.

One of World’s Most Southerly Ski Areas Up For Sale

The biggest ski field in Tasmania, the large island off the southern tip of Australia's mainland, is up for sale by the family who have run it for nearly five decades.

Ben Lomond ski area, which has seven lifts, mostly drags, serving around 150 metres of vertical, is on sale with a price tag of $1.75 million Australian (£980K)

French Resort Introducing Dynamic Pricing For Ski Passes

The French resort of Val Cenis is believed to be the first of the country's larger areas to introduce airline-ticket style 'dynamic pricing' to its lift passes for the coming season.

Dynamic pricing generally means that the further in advance you buy your ticket, the less you pay, although there are many subtleties behind that blanket description. A big one, on the other side of the coin, is that in some cases is that peak season prices can rise higher than they used to be.

Eurostar Direct London-French Alps Ski Train Tickets on Sale For 2019-20

Eurostar has put tickets on sale for the ski train running direct between London St Pancras, and the French Alps, via Ashford in Kent.

The first outbound train is an overnight service departing London on Friday 20th December 2019. The last return services from France are daytime and evening departures on Saturday 11th April 2020. The overnight service arrives in London on Easter Sunday morning, April 12th, 2020.

Mammoth Abandons Plan to Stay Open to August

Mammoth Mountain ski area in California has abandoned a plan it made earlier in the year to stay open for skiing and snowboarding in to August for the third time in its history.

Instead the area has announced it will close at the end of the ski day on the final Sunday of this month, July 28th.

Saas Fee Starts Its 9 Month Ski Season, Is ‘Winter 19-20’ Underway?!

Saas Fee kicks off its summer ski season this weekend and indeed its 2019-20 seasons, whilst most glacier ski areas in the Alps opening in June or July close again for the autumn by August or September, Saas Fee stays open right through to the following spring – a nine month season through to next April.

Huge Snowstorm Hits Australia

A massive snowstorm is currently hitting Australian ski slopes with up to 20cm snowfalls reported in the first 24 hours of its arrival, but with much more to come.

The snowfall is being accompanied by strong winds at times, but this is expected to ease in the latter half of the week.

New Electric Vehicles for Val Thorens

Val Thorens has released details of two electric vehicle innovations coming for this winter.

A futuristic electric buggy-like machine called the 'Z Green' will make getting anywhere in the resort possible, particularly for passengers with reduced mobility. The Tourist Office is offering two 'Z Green' vehicles available for free for visitors with disabilities.

October 2019 London Ski Show Tickets 15% Off This Weekend

The London ski show is in the early stages of ticket sales for this year's event, which returns to Battersea Park this autumn from Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 October, dates within the English half term holiday.

Ticket prices this year are subject to a £1.25 booking fee and standard prices currently displayed on the show's website site are £17.25 for those aged 17 or older. Ticket prices for children aged 6 and 11 is a little ambiguous as the ages are quoted in different price bands. It's £8 for children aged 11-16, £5 for children Aged 6 to 10 while kids aged six and under are free. A family ticket including entry for two adults and two children under 16. There are small discounts on the adult price for students and other concessions and the option of an evening only 'Apres Ticket' for £10.25 when the show is open to 10pm on the Thursday and Friday. The other tickets include apres access anyway and all of the above prices include the £1.25 booking fee.

Ryanair Launches New Bristol to Grenoble Ski Route for 2020

Ryanair have announced a new flight route from Bristol to Grenoble will operate next winter.

The Saturday flights will run from 11 January to 28 March departing Bristol around lunchtime arriving Grenoble mid-afternoon and returning late afternoon arriving Bristol soon after 5pm.

July Powder Alarm in Norway

Norway's Fonna ski area, 1200 metres up on the Folgefonna Glacier, has issued a powder alarm for 20cm of fresh snow this morning, July 3rd, 2019.

The centre is one of three small summer ski areas in Norway, although one, the Stryn Glacier, has already ended its 2019 ski season.

Ski Day to End With Total Solar Eclipse in The Andes

Skiers in the Andes will be able to end their ski day with a solar eclipse today as the eclipse's path moves across South America in a Northwest to Southeast direction.[/b]

A number of ski areas are planning special events to tie in with the eclipse.
