Snow Forecast For May Skiers

The heavy snow in the last week of April that has led to ski areas on both sides of the Atlantic re-opening for snowsports this weekend looks set to continue in to the first week of May.
Up to 90cm/three feet of fresh snow has fallen in the Alps and Rockies over the last seven days and similar snowfalls are expected over the next week which takes us in to May.

Scottish Centre To Re-Open For May Skiing With Fresh Snow

The Lecht ski area in Scotland (pictured above this morning) has announced it will re-open some runs this May Day Bank Holiday long weekend after a week of snowfall and consistent snowfall in the Scottish highlands which is expected to continue over the weekend.

Western US Should Be Snowy Again Next Winter

Ocean temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific are on the move and from that it's possible to extrapolate the likelihood of a snowy ski season 2016-17 in Western North America – kind of.
The region's weather is dominated by two long standing weather phenomena - El Niño and La Niña, one or the other of which ends to dominate for a year or longer at a time.

Late April Snow For Most of the World’s Ski Areas

After a week of heavy snow in the Alps and in Western North America (detailed in our report yesterday), with snowfall, unusually for this far in to spring, reaching right down to the valley floor, more of the world's ski regions are reporting significant snowfall too, with the start of May less than a week away.

Snow Keeps Falling As Most Ski Areas Close

It was a snowy end to the season at most of the 'still open for 2015-16' ski areas that closed yesterday.
Others that remain open are reporting powder conditions as we enter May as April continues to outdo December for snowfall.
There's been heavy fresh snow again in the Alps, the Rockies and even Scotland where snow was reported down to resort level at Aviemore on Sunday.

US Appeals Court Backs Alta Ban On Snowboarders

Alta ski area in Utah has won a case brought by a group of snowboarders who sought to overturn the resort's ban on boarding.
The snowboarders had originally lost their initial case ;last year and the original decision was upheld by the Court Of Appeal this week.

Free Tennis, Achery, Golf And More With Your Summerski Pass

Les 2 Alpes in the French Alps has announced that it will operate the longest summerski season in France this year, opening from 18 June to 27th August. It has also announced that it will be offering a lot more than snowsports for anyone visiting and buying a six day lift pass, pried at €196.50

Big April Snow Falls On Each Side of The Atlantic

There have been some big snowfalls on each side of the Atlantic in the past 48 hours (following on from an often snowy week last week when up to 30cm of fresh snow fell).
In the Alps still-open ski areas have reported up to 50cm of fresh snow had accumulated by this morning.

Where Have all The Skiers Gone?” ask Scottish Ski Areas

Three of Scotland's five mountain ski areas still have snowsports to offer skiers and snowboarders, but there aren't many takers.
"It's always the same at this time of year," said Chair of Ski-Scotland Heather Negus, "We can offer great sliding, particularly on the upper mountains, but down in the valleys and in the cities, people see daffodils and cherry blossom and believe the ski season is over, but believe me it's not!"

Well we did think this was going to be the last one of the season, but there's still more snow (at altitude) in the forecast and there are still ski areas open, so next week will be the final 15/16 Snow Mail before we go Monthly for the summer!

No, not an April Fool, but in news that will surprise exactly no-one - sniffer dogs at Manchester Airport are reported to have been detecting "cheese and sausages" rather than drugs. 8)

Nevis Range Installing New Hydro Scheme

Nevis Range ski area in the Western Scottish Highlands has begun work on a hydro electric plant which will generate most of the energy needed to run the centre and at times of peak supply export excess green electricity to the grid.
The new 1,100kW hydro scheme is being built at a cost of £4 million and is due to be up and running by the end of November in time for the next ski season.

Whistler Plan Major Investment For Blackcomb Mountain

Whistler ski area in Canada have announced plans for a huge 345m Canadian Dolar investment in new infrastructure, much of it focused on the resort's Blackcomb Mountain, in a three-phase project entitled 'Whistler Blackcomb Renaissance.'
The plans include new base and mountain stations, a new high speed lift linking them, other ski area improvements in the region and the construction of an indoor water park, The Watershed, at the mountain's upper base.

US Resort Passes 20m Season Snowfall Total

The Alaskan ski area of Alyeska has passed the 20 metre mark in terms of snowfall it has received this season.
In fact the latest 20cm of snow reported overnight took the American resort's total to 20.5m. Ironically it's currently closed due to 'extreme weather.'

Fresh April Snow in the Alps, Pyrenees, Scotland ...and Argentina

There's been an unusually heavy snowstorm in Andorra bringing up to 30cm (a foot) of fresh snow to the country's slopes this week - great news for anyone lucky enough to have booked there this week, the second of the school holidays for many families.

In a bizarre turn of events, reports are claiming that cloud-making technology being developed for the 2022 Qatar World Cup have resulted in an unprecedented – and accidental – snowfall in the region. This breakthrough has created an incredible bidding war in the Alps, with several resorts clamouring to become the first to use artificial snow clouds to give their snow levels a bit of a top up.
