Train To Be A Ski Instructor In Time For Next Winter

A British company is offering wold-be ski instructors the chance to train from scratch to become qualified ski instructors over the summer. Once qualified, Snoworks GAP are then offering a guaranteed job teaching in St Anton next winter.
There's o catch and no small print BUT anyone tempted should be aware that they'll need to have a working knowledge of German to understand the course and for the job afterwards, they'll also need to find the £2,995 – course fee for the three week course.

World Speed Skiing Record Broken

The record for the fastest speed achieved on skis – also the fastest speed achieved by any lining creature without mechanised assistance – has been broken in the French ski resort of Vars.

More Fresh Snow in the Austrian Alps

Although snow has been forecast in most of the Western Alps over the coming week, so far the biggest accumulations have been reported in the Austrian Alps.
The Stubai glacier reported 20cm of fresh snow on Wednesday/Thursday and the Skiwelt has also had some good snowfalls.

Still More Heavy Snow in Western North America

There have been more big snowfalls in Western North America in the last 48 hours as the 'Godzilla El Nino' ski season that keeps on giving shows no sign of ending.
Resorts in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Montana have reported a foot/30cm of fresh snow in 24 hours, some have received 60cm (two feet) in 48 hours.

Scotland’s Ski Areas Struggle for Easter Snow Cover

Scotland's five highland ski areas are struggling to maintain snow cover in to the Easter Holidays, which begin today across much of the country.
The Scottish Highlands have had a fairly unprecedented largely dry, stable weather pattern for much of February and March enabling the ski centres to set very high visitor numbers during the half term holidays last month.

Spring Skiing options looking pretty darned good!

With impressive high altitude snow depths pretty much across The Alps now, prospects for Spring Skiing (and, of course, an Easter break if you can leave this weekend) could hardly be better.
The long-range forecast is a mix of classic warm Spring days mixed in with a good number of cold and snowy top-ups.

Major Lancashire Dry Slope Refurbishment and Expansion

Ski Rossendale, the dry slope located 20 miles north of Manchester in Lancashire is to get a major upgrade of its facilities and an expanded beginner area.
Once under threat of going out of business and forced to close for several months a few years ago before re-emerging as a social enterprise, the complex has been awarded £440,000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England's Improvement Fund to improve facilities (with additional match funding bringing the total investment in up to £630,000).

Whistler Extends Ski Season

Whistler Blackcomb is the latest North American West Coast ski area to announce it will be extending its ski season on one of its two mountains.
The resort says it has now passed its 10 year average annual snowfall of 1,163cm (458in) figure, having received 1,177cm (463in) of snow so far this winter.

British Gold in Snowboarding World Cup

Team GB's 2014 Olympic Snowboard finalist, 22 Year old Jamie Nicholls, is already proving he'll be ready for the next winter Olympics in 2018 by taking 1st place in the World Cup Slopestyle Snowboarding Competition in the Czech Republic yesterday, Sunday 20th March 2016.

Ryding Finished 15th in World Cup Finals

Britain's Dave Ryding finished in an impressive 15th place in the Men's slalom race in the World Cup Finals in St Moritz this morning, taking another 16 points in the last World Cup race of the 15-16 season.
With a starting place of 23rd, Ryding was placed 14th after the first run and scored near identical times on both runs of 52.62 in run one and 52.68 in run two.

Resorts Extend Ski Season

Ski resorts along North America's west coast have started to announce extended ski seasons following the huge amount of snow that has fallen in the region this season – and continues to fall.
Squaw Valley in California has announced it will be open at least in to May now, and says it will then reassess. It currently has a 420cm (14 foot) base and received another 60cm/2 feet of snow this week. Similar volumes more are expected in the week ahead too.

Brexit Fears Push Sterling Values Down

(The pound still buys more than a year ago in Norway, above, just)
The pounds has dropped in value against leading ski currencies over the past month due to 'Brexit' fears, according to global currency business Centtrip.
The company says that, compared to values a year ago, the pound is now only up in value, by 3.1%, against the Norwegian Kronor. This is different to the position a few months ago when the pound was up against most 'ski currencies' except the US dollar.

Old Zermatt Gondolas Sell Out In Five Days

The 50 year old cabins of the old Gant–Blauherd gondola were sold in just five days according to Zermatt ski resort in Switzerland.
When the lift company decided to upgrade the lift, built in 1970, they offered the old gondola cabin for sale at 500 Euros each and they were snapped up.

Ryding Qualifies For World Cup Finals

British slalom skier Dave Ryding's is heading to the FIS World Cup Finals in St Moritz next week after making it through the season as one of the 25 best in the world.

The Dolomites Transformed

It has come rather late in the season but the past 72 hours have seen a complete transformation of conditions in the Italian Dolomites with more than a metre of snow falling on some resorts.
The biggest snowfalls came from Saturday afternoon to Monday morning with up to 80cm in 24 hours reported at the heart of the snowstorm.

Another Big Saturday Snowfall Due

Forecasts are predicting some big snowfalls across the Alps, Dolomites and Pyrenees over the next 48 hours, with Saturday the main focus for heavy snow in most areas.
It's at least the thirds time this winter that the big snowfalls have arrived on 'changeover day.'

World’s Deepest Snow Base Reaches 5 Metres

The deepest recorded snow base at a ski area on the planet at present has reached five metres for the first time this season.
Alyeska ski area in Alaska hit the 5m mark yesterday on its upper runs in the latest spate of snow storms which have continued for much of the winter along North America's Pacific coast. The resort has also had more snow than any other so far this season – and more snow than most other areas have ever received in any one season – clocking up 17.5 metres (over 57 feet) so far this winter.

National Schools Snowsport Week Coming Next Month

Skier And Car Aim to Break World Speed Skiing Record

Jaguar Cars have released a YouTube video showing former British Olympic ski racer Graham Bell hitting speeds of 100mph, they say, whilst being towed behind a Jaguar in Austria.
The company say they have entered a technical agreement with Graham Bell with plans to break the current Guinness world record for speed on skis, held by Simone Oregone who achieved 156mph skiing downhill.
