Fresh Summer Snow in the Alps
Fresh Summer Snow in the Alps
Published : 25-Jul-2017 12:07
Glacier ski areas in the Alps have been reporting fresh snow on their high altitude slopes in the past 24 hours, with in at lower elevations.
Currently eight glacier ski areas are open – two each in the big flour ski nations – and most reported a few inches (up to five centimetres) of fresh snow, with Tignes posting the image above from its café terrace by the Grand Motte glacier, and Hintertux the image below of one of its staff.
The fresh snow, although not unusual any month of the year at these altitudes, brought a freshen up of the slopes and the first new cover for over a month at most areas where the normal summer ski conditions see slopes skiable from around 7am to noon with the best conditions during the mid-morning period when hard frozen slopes thaw, but are not then so thawed they are too sticky to slide on easily.
Low temperatures and changeable conditions with possibly a little more snow are expected for the rest of this week before a return to higher temperatures and sunny weather as we enter August.
