Originally developed during the Soviet era and then closed due to 'lack of interest' Chimbulak re-opened in the 1990s with investment in new lifts giving a decidedly 'Western' feel. Located only 25km from capital Almaty, the trails include some that are regarded as the world's toughest. All of them are located on the northern slope of Chimbulak. The Chimbulak Plateau is 3km long with an average slope angle of 45 degrees. The Kazakhstan Olympic team uses Chimbulak for training. Night skiing reportedly occurs 'spontaneously' when the slopes are moonlit, aided by artificial lighting, especially on the 'Professor' hill. Facilities have been greatly improved in recent years with a gondola up[ to the base of the ski area and thenm several new quad chairlifts and combination quad chairlifts/gondolas installed.

The Kazakh ski resort of Chimbulak is at an altitude of 2,220m.

Chimbulak has direct access to 20 marked pistes, served by a total of 5 ski lifts.

The ski resort itself is at 2,220m, so skiing or boarding back to the resort is usually possible. With ski lifts as high as 3,163m, skiing and snowboarding is assured throughout the season.

There are a variety of pistes to suit all levels of skier ability, from Beginner to Expert.

Chimbulak is highly rated by Snowboarders.
