Snow For May in the Alps
Snow For May in the Alps
Published : 03-May-2018 02:10
Alpine ski areas that are still open this week are likely to offer skiers fresh snow for the coming weekend - the last of the season for half-a-dozen ski areas including Tignes and Val Thorens.
Up to 40cm of snow in the past 24 hours has been reported with the year-round glacier ski slopes of the Klein Matterhorn in Zermatt reporting the biggest totals so far.
Conditions are currently not good on higher slopes as the snow falls and other weather conditions including fog (low cloud) and high winds have set the avalanche danger up to levels 3 (considerable).
The final days of April and first of May have also led to a series of tragedies with 10 people, climbers and ski tourers, dead in the mountains in five separate incidents. Deaths included one in a fall and three of hypothermia.
There is still some snow falling today but conditions are set to improve and temperatures climb rapidly with sunshine expected in to the weekend.
Saas Fee, currently closed for snow sports, re-opening in July, is pictured above with fresh snow this morning.
