Get your Snow Dance on for a Happy New Year

The major forecast models have been swinging into agreement over the past few days, and it does - at last - look as if the mild, high pressure system that has been bothering the European Alps will be moving on at the end of the year.

That weather system has effectively been blocking out more wintry weather in The Alps, and it will be giving way to cold air from the East.

The devil, as always, will be in the detail that will become clearer over the next week but the first week of January (at least) is looking like being cold and snowy.

From the forecasts right now, we're looking at a 10C-15C drop in temperature for the East (Austria, etc.) with a lesser fall to the West (5C-10C). This will bring the cold; to at or below seasonal averages.

Most important, of course, is the precipitation; regular, light snow looks probable for the East, with the heaviest falls to North and West. That may all change around, but it's looking promising....

Currently looking good for the Pyrenees and Southern Alps also, albeit perhaps with a more moderate temperature drop.
